Kevin's dad was an executive for Boeing.
Boeing is headquartered in Chicago. He's rich. And it seems like it would make sense that he had an in with the airlines that could make all of those flights cheaper.

Wan they're a sure fire thing. Christmas travel is extremely difficult so I don't think it a plothole that the mother had a hard time coming back.

The McCallisters were obviously an old Irish organized crime family with Rob being the head, Peter was second in command and kept the operation rolling while Rob laid low in Paris, and Frank was obiviously the muscle. They were rich as hell with no apparent means of income and all three lived in old organized crime strongholds

According to the official novelization of the film – written by Todd Strasser as a quick promotional tie-in – Mr. Peter McCallister is a prominent businessman (maybe a day trader?) and Mrs. Kate McCallister is a fashion designer, thus all the mannequins that Kevin was able to use in the party scene.
She probably wasn’t a couture designer, though. Likely she was designing outfits for Chico’s or Dress Barn. We also learned via the novelization that brother Buzz's pet tarantula is named as Axl.
