One could look at the success of Top Gun Maverick as a triumph of fun over finger-wagging, real time action over CG-fests, the pull of one of Hollywood’s last true stars…but Hollywood will likely see it as another wave of 80s nostalgia waiting to be tapped. So what’s left?

Reboot of Back to the Future?
The Goonies return?
ET and Elliot re-unite?

What other 80s franchises are due a relaunch/revisit?

Hopefully none of them.

Hollywood’s track record on reboots and sequels is dismal for the most part.

Top Gun was an anomaly.

All of them but with race/gender swaps and a message about the evils of the patriarchy or something about LGBTQ.

Rocky X: The Alzheimers Years

He might not remember Apollo or Adrian, but he remembers how to punch (sometimes)

I'm surprised hollywood hasn't attempted The Neverending Story again. I think you could hype up 1 movie and make a killing.

EDIT: Wow DallasTiger got me by a minute.

It wouldn’t be a reboot or a redo. It would be a soft reboot like Ghostbusters or Jurassic Park.

I think an Indiana Jones with his grandkid or something doing stuff in the 80’s.

Pretty sure Bob Gale and Bom Zemekis both said BTTF won’t be touched as long as they’re alive.

BTTF would be a prime target for a soft reboot.

Top Gun & Ghostbusters After Life worked because some of the same principals from the original works came back to honor & carry on the stories.

They were works of cinematic art, not mere content to check boxes & fill production schedules. .

I haven’t seen top gun yet but between that and GB afterlife seem to be taking reboots in the right direction.

Looking at you XMen Origins: Wolverine

Surprised it hasn't been rebooted...especially since The Last Jedi campaign.

The Goonies is coming for sure. Hadn’t thought of it until now but that one makes the most sense and I can only imagine how diverse that cast will be for the sake of being diverse.

Caddyshack reboot might break the M/TV board.

The Goonies could do one where all the kids of the original cast get involved in a modern day adventure. It would be cool if they did a whole bunch of nostalgia throwbacks throughout the movie. Then seemingly out of nowhere, the original cast shows up to save the day.

I felt the latest Ghostbusters was more of a Goonie sort of movie than a Ghostbusters. Really, you could follow a similar formula to Maverick with a Goonies relaunch. Bring back some or all of the cast, contrast the generations, age, values and things like that, don't shite on your OGs to pimp the new generation, but give both dignity and you could have a decent relaunch.

As someone else said here already, though, Maverick was an anomaly more than a norm. Hollywood has to push their message above even profit, it seems.
