Variety blames, wait for it...... drum roll..... the Democratic debate.

“Westworld” came back online on Sunday night for season 3, but struggled to match the viewership highs it achieved two years ago up against the Democratic debate.

The season 3 premiere drew 901,000 total viewers to the live broadcast on HBO, which represents a 57% dip from last season’s premiere (which drew 2.1 million) and the show’s lowest viewership tally to date. Overall, the episode scored 1.7 million viewers across HBO’s platforms when taking into account digital viewers. That means its viewership was split almost 50-50 between live and streaming, a much more even balance than previous seasons which skewed far more towards live. For comparison, the last episode of “Westworld,” which aired way back in June 2018, scored 1.6 million total viewers.

That debut figure is still one of HBO’s strongest this season, outperforming “The Outsider” by 24% and the “Watchmen” premiere by 13%.

There is not doubt that bumping up against the Democratic debate, which featured plenty of discussion on the coronavirus pandemic currently sweeping the country, didn’t help the “Westworld” cause. However, the CNN debate was watched by 10.8 million viewers, a substantial number, but nowhere near the 15 and 20 million pairs of eyeballs that tuned in to previous debates.

Yes, but the total eyeballs in Season 2 opener was 3 million.

Variety magazine

This guy on youtube makes some good points. youtube link

He says it is too woke. Said the main leads this season are no match for Ed Harris and Anthony Hopkins. They screwed around and waited til E4 to put in Harris and made a mess of his appearance with a mess of discombobulation. Said the men are made to look stupid in this season and it's turning audience off.

Yes, maybe so but you know, that wasn't the case with E1. A confusing as hell 2nd season followed by a nearly 2 year layoff means out of site and out of mind.

I'll go out on a limb and guess that season 2 is the main reason for a drop in season 3 ratings.

Plus I bet a bunch of people dropped HBO after Game of Thrones ended.

I am a Michael chrichton fan, I’ve consumed everything he’s written, directed and produced. I also love smart sci-fi especially AI stuff.

this show was right up my alley and I hated it. Completely exhausted with it after S1 I gave up. The very definition of too clever for its own good

and this

I lost interest in season 2 and just never kept up. Seeing Marshawn and Aaron Paul in Season 3 was enticing, but then I remembered I'd have to go back through the show to figure everything out. After that, they weren't enough to do it for me

Yeah gave up too.

Just a mess...I don't want to have to pay THAT much attention to every second of a show.

eh, I'm enjoying the hell out of season 3. So far the theme, pacing, story, and imagery has been 500% better than season 2 and if things keep on this pace it'll actually surpass season 1 for me.

I won't go into much detail: but person of interest (the tv show) type stories are always some of my favorites

ETA: also season 3 hasn't been up it's own arse like season 2 was. Season 2 was just confusion for the sake of confusion and unfortunately it sucked

S2 was a treadmill of a watch. I hate woke bullshite (and have to look past it from some of the outspoken woke cast) but have liked this season. Lots of action.

Aaron Paul is a solid add, and gets to use the “just watched Tuco brain some fool” expression A LOT.

I got through Season 1, and enjoyed it immensely.

I never started S2, because I felt the loop was closed.

I just had no desire to keep going. From you all's review of S2, I am confident I made the right choice

Season 2 had a couple of really good moments. But overall it was too clever. Tried too hard to throw the audience off at the expense of good storytelling.

Season 3 has been pretty entertaining so far. Season 2 sucked so bad at least half of the viewers left.

I’m just clearly not smart enough to watch this show. After I watched the season one finale, I was like... what the frick happened here?

If I have to read an episode synopsis to get the plot... well, I’m just not going to watch

i liked season 2 more then most but the main problem with the show is they are trying to force what is at best the 3rd or 4th most interesting character into the prime role.

Delores has always been out shined by the other storylines or characters within her own storyline. Much more interested in MIB/William, or Ford/Bernard, or Maeve and her crew or MIB/Father/Logan ect.

HBO shoots themselves in the foot in modern times with a follow up season to a hit show with no source material

I didn't finish season 1. It just became too much of a chore to try to follow; no continuity.

I'm not opposed to the theory, but they didn't make it entertaining enough.
