Watching Supernatural for the 1st time

So far, it seems to be a "monster of the week" type of show. Does the format remain like that for all 15 seasons?
Also, without spoilers, is the series finale a good payoff? I don't want to invest time in a show this long only to get Game of Throned at the end.

It does not.

There are two, technically, but both are good/great.
Seasons 4-5 are pretty amazing. You have to just make it through season 1, kind of like Justified.

15 seasons.
45 minutes an episode
20+ episodes per season.
Quite the journey is ahead of you.

Exactly why I'm trying to make sure it's worth it

It's an amazing show. Sam and Dean are hilarious and have a great "bromance". There will be some ups and downs along the way. A couple seasons are stinkers (I'm looking at you Leviathan season...) but overall definitely worth it.
The show was originally supposed to stop at 5 seasons (which is why it seems like a good ending spot). With the popularity they kept it rolling. Had to recapture the thunder through season 6\7 but then it was off to the races again.

Season 1 is ok...background material
3-5 are good/great
the next few seasons are not great...background material. You can kind of judge how the season is going in 2-3 episodes. There are some really good seasons after that, though.

It's funny you say that. I sorta watched it when it came out because my daughter liked it, and from memory I'd say the exact same thing you said for season 1, then later it gets complicated and has multi-season storylines.
But I just started a re-watch I'm surprised at how much of the complicated stuff is baked into this show beginning with the pilot. The "monster of the week" stuff is always there but the longer arcs are developed in almost every episode.
As for quality It does dip in a couple of the later seasons but nothing like GOT. It's tough to maintain high quality over that long of a run but it never tanks and probably never dips below "decent" even at the low points. Finale is really good from what I remember, it just takes a long time to get there.

The finale is ok but was hampered by being filmed during COVID. The first couple of seasons are the worst but once they find they're footing it really takes off.

It’s better than i was expecting.
Worth a watch.

First five seasons are easily the best part that doesn't mean the other seasons are bad just not up to par with the first five seasons

Lots of fluff in seasons 5-15. Each of those seasons could’ve been 10 episodes each, but it’s a WB/CW show. Every show was like that.
The Flash
Arrow
DC Legends of Tomorrow
Can’t speak for the others, but I bet they were 22 episodes per season.

No spoilers, but this is easily the best scene in the show. . .and probably the best scene in CW history

I'm beyond jealous of you. Wish I could go back and watch it all over again for the first time. I started it about halfway thru season 1 and was hooked. No pun intended. I think that was actually the first episode I saw.

I get chills remembering that scene

So jealous. Wish I could start it again like it was the first time. Season 1-5 is some of the best television ever. It was originally intended for 5 seasons but became so popular they kept it going.
What episode are you on?

I recently started as well first time. I got half way thru S1 & had to take a break. Jared Padalecki (Sam) is a bit grating.
So far S2 pacing is better. I'm glad I stuck with it.

His entrance with that car and that song. So damn good!
