Watching La La Land right now

Man it is not good. Really wanted it to be good because I like the cast. But it's just not.

I liked it. A little but the numbers (jazz is such a crutch for coolness, and struggling artists love to do one-man-shows), but entertaining.

Yeah, well, you know, that’s just, like, uh, your opinion, man.

It’s a beautiful, well acted, scored, sang, and directed movie that I didn’t like at all.

I'm only half way through so I'm not giving up on it yet. Just don't think the storyline is interesting so far. The music is fine, but it's not good enough to make up for it.

Fast forwarded through the musical parts and that made it much better

I was going to watch it on a flight once but couldn't get past the scene where they all got out of their cars and started singing and dancing on the freeway. Which was about 3 mins into the movie I believe.

I liked it. I think how much you like it is in relation to how much you like the cast.

Just finished it. Second half of the movie was definitely better than the first. Still don't think it was great, but wasn't bad. Production and choreography and music and all that was good. Just never really got hooked into the story.

Dude, I despise musicals.. always have... But La La Land was an incredible film... Easily one of the best, most refreshing and original films of the last few years. It conjured nostalgia an old time quality all while still modern.
The opening numbers are incredible and after about 45 minutes it's no longer a musical. There are no "break out in song" moments and in fact doesn't have much music at all until the finale.
It becomes one of the best relationship stories you'll ever see and the ending is so emotionally gripping and heartbreaking and real that it deserved the Oscar for that sequence alone.
I just caught most of it a couple weeks ago and it was actually better on additional watch because you know that what your watching doesn't last.

Hm see this is where I disagree. Everything else you mentioned is true, but I didn't feel like they did a good job connecting you to the characters. They basically skipped over their relationship with a music sequence, then had Gosling recap it in a 5 second span while they're laying in bed. I ended up not caring about their relationship at all because of that.

See and that was lost on me because the movie never connected me to their story. Good ending but I missed the emotions.
The only breakout moment that I felt connected to the story was when he drove to her town and then she was singing at her audition, that was a great sequence.
All in all, I'd give it 2.5 stars. Not great, not terrible.

La La Land is a really good film. Not perfect but an excellent set and acting with an okay story. Emma and Ryan are great together. Crazy, Stupid, Love doesn’t get near enough love as it should.

Agree. I thought that was a great movie. One of the reasons I was expecting to really like this one just something about it didn't connect with me. Guess that happens sometimes.

We watched it last night. Neither the spousal unit nor I got into it at all.
I think that, like with "The Artist", it is probably good at the theater on the big screen with no distractions, but it just doesn't work well on a TV.

Completely agree on the relationship story. I was stunned at how much the ending hit me. It was so well-done.

This is one of the worst threads I’ve ever seen.
