Watched the Shining for the first time last night

Never really got into horror but I watched it last night and really enjoyed it. I did think that the middle of the movie was far more creepy than the end of the movie.
A couple questions:
- Who actually is Tony? At first I thought he was just a creepy demon living inside but it seems like he was actually an ally to Danny?
- Can someone explain why Jack is in the picture from 1921? I think I understand but not 100% sure.
- What the hell is with the dude in the bear suit blowing the old guy?
- Were all the dead people in the hotel ghosts or zombies or something? At first I thought they were just Jack/Danny hallucinating but then Wendy saw them as well.

He becomes part of the hotel.

That’s the question isn’t it.

They are spirits that have been absorbed by the hotel.

Stanley Kubrick took that one to the grave.

He’s Danny from the future. Danny’s middle name is Anthony.

So when he dies at the hotel he is absorbed and basically exists all throughout the hotel’s timeline and haunts people similar to Grady?

You should check out the ABC miniseries from 1997 also. It's much truer to the source material.

The movie is way better horror when he's slowly going insane and you don't really know what's going on. It's what people liked about The Witch.
Once he's psycho and out to kill, it's meh, but that's the part that became famous.

So maybe Tony from the future experienced Jack killing Wendy and he was able to stop it?

Check out Dr. Sleep which is the sequel. It's a little slow in some parts but the last 45 minutes or so are incredible.
I second the idea of finding the mini-series. You can find copies on eBay and Amazon. King didn't like the Kubrick version so he produced it with SciFi (they did several of his books as mini-series). The mini-series was also filmed it at The Stanley which is the hotel that King based the Overlook on.

Also, I thought the tub lady was even scarier in the ABC one.

It may be more faithful but it looks and feels incredibly cheap compared to the film.

And a lot less artistic. Jack is in the picture because he is the reincarnation of one of the early inhabitants/workers of the hotel ("You have always been the caretaker"). The movie is about the cyclical nature of violence. Check out the Documentary Room 237 about all the crazy interpretations of the movie.

"Tony" is just a kid's coping mechanism to explain the visions that come with being psychic.
The hotel is also "psychic" in that it is like a battery that collects spiritual energies. The ghosts are spiritual memories. The worst the experience, the more powerful the memory. The Overlook is implied to have enough memories that it seeks out, seduces, and helps to create new terrible memories.
The hotel is like a self-fulfilling, self-destruction prophecy, much like a drug addiction. Since the Overlook is really a character in the movie(and book), it seems to have its own motive, but I don't think that's the case.
It is just Loaded with bad history. And that bad mojo helps create more bad mojo.
Now add in isolation and push GO.

Tony is the Shining speaking to Danny in his head.
Jack has always been the caretaker.
Lots of scary ghosts in that hotel. A lot of bad things went down there, and perverted things.
All ghosts but really just the hotel’s Shining manifesting itself showing a lot of those bad things that have happened. Dick explained it to Danny like with the Shining the bad things leave a trace of themselves behind. Like when you burn something it leaves behind a smell.

The movie isn’t exactly subtle about jack being an alcoholic

In the book, the man is a former owner of the hotel and the guy in the dog suit was an employee he treated like shite. There’s a creepy af scene in the book where Danny has a run in with the dog suit guy
