I heard Randy Quaid discussing the movie on an interview about the Reagan film so I decided to give it a spin - better than o thought because of the end - but I wished it spent more time on his life at LSU. I didn’t realize the original book was based at UNC - but they wanted a real football environment so they choose LSU…

I thought Siskel and Ebert were a bit harsh personally

Trailer

Siskel & Ebert

***. Haha it was Dennis - my own cousin Eddie brain caused me to spin around 20x and forget this when I turned on the microwave- thank you for pointing out my error :)

Dennis, maybe?

(ETA: I'm not being an a-hole, Dennis was in both films, Randy was in neither.)

You don't remember Reagan's cousin Eddie making out with his daughter in a trailer while his son bomped his baloney in the other room?

No. They wanted to film in NC but NC would not let them film bc they thought it would defame the legend of Charlie “Choo Choo” Justice. They chose LSU instead. LSU gladly let then film on campus and use the facilities and BR surrounding areas. The character of Gavin is a composite of many players the author covered.

I stayed in the stands when they filmed after LSU lost to Bama. Must have had 10 different takes for one scene. LSU only loss that year.

Scenes were shot at halftime and after. One “player” kept jumping early, and the crowd kept giving him hell for it.

The college scenes were the best part of the movie, despite the bad southern accents and actors in their 30's playing college kids.

She was basically 40.

They looked like parents of a kid on campus.

They also filmed this when Tiger Stadium had the T style goal post. I remember them masking the center pole and adding two legs for the H-style look for the movie.

A little tidbit of trivia.

Hodson couldn't play and Mickey Guidry couldn't get it done.

And looked older.

They also used a lot of college age extras and maybe some theater students or ones in graduate program for featured extra and/or some brief lines which made them look even older at times.

Did they use the building that was abandoned for years across Stanford from LSU beach? I think building was a part of Canon’s money laundering or whatever he did.

Wish they made those apartments that eventually got that building torn down smaller and further back from the street.

Someone from Ole Miss told me that they discussed filming it at Ole Miss as well, but the original script played up the white RB and black RB angle more or maybe more realistically based on era which Ole Miss didn’t think would be a good thing for their image. I can’t remember exact time frame it was filmed, but I am thinking Ole Miss was still waving confederate flags with the Colonel Reb mascot which would shine a spotlight on them still doing the same as in the era in film.

I liked it. I thought it was a pretty good take on the “what happens when your heroes grow old” motif. Plus the whole Louisiana thing.

But strangely Hodson DID come in late and throw a pick 6.

Didn't DQ break his nose on one of the hits. Also, it actually snowed during filming which was incorporated.

Scene where John Goodman was thrown threw window at restaurant was shot at Hotel on Airline where Home Depot sits. Forgot name of hotel, maybe Oak Manor..

I remember scenones being shot during games. Students or extras were dressed in 50s clothes. Sucked losing to Bama that night.

I was there in the stands for the day game they filmed at halftime. They also filmed some late night stuff in the stadium. Pretty cool. Quaid, Hutton and Lange stayed at the White House on Stanford Ave by the Lake. Sits at a strange angle and is the first house next to Stanford. it was torn down but a new one was built in the same spot. Pretty cool having that all around BR back then.
