ALIEN works because even without the horror and suspense, its a believable world populated with real people.

It's not something I had thought about, but I agree with this. I thought the Marines in Aliens felt like a parody and it was hard to take them seriously or care about them.

Yup. Give Aliens credit. Its a damn good sequel. They for once, didn't try to follow the same formula used in the first movie but tried to come up with a different type of story. And it worked.

Alien 3 is the second best in the entire series behind Alien IMO.
And Aliens is really good. It's just a bit overrated in this board I think.
