I always thought Shelly Long looked better in red hair like in Troop Beverly Hills.
Definitely wouldn't think of her as "butt arse ugly"...
I think the point wasn't that she was supposed to be "drop dead sexy" but rather cute, intelligent, and a foil to Sam who was always able to woo these gorgeous women but for the longest time was rebuffed by Diane.
She wasn't as attractive as "in her prime" Kirstie Alley, but I always thought Alley looked even better in Star Trek II...
But damn could Alley do some amazing glamor shots:

Shelly Long pretty much carried the show the first couple of seasons but completely disagree that it went downhill "rapidly"
Thought it improved considerably with the addition of Frazier as a major character along with more lines/development for Norm and Cliff and let's face it,Woody was better than Coach

Most useless character in a sitcom? I nominate Nick Yemana, played by Jack Soo, on Barney Miller. Totally useless. They had Fish to drop the deadpan one-liners.

In fact, per Kelsey Grammer the reason the Frasier character was retained was b/c Long hated him and wanted him dropped. The writers hated Long, and so kept Frasier around to annoy her.

Little fact: Jay Thomas grew up in New Orleans and graduated from Jesuit. Ran into him one day outside of a nursing home in Belle Chasse his Mom was staying in.
