Time wasn’t exactly out of step with critical opinion. There have been more praised graphic novels (Maus won the Pulitzer), but Watchmen is easily the most praised superhero comic. I would venture to say it is the only true comic book that is treated as a serious work of fiction.
Some of its influence has since been blunted by the fact what was revolutionary then is now comic convention. In fact, Moore has often complained about the negative influence Watchmen has had on the comic book, as everyone scrambled to make their books “darker”.
Frankly, the greatest thing about the book is that although it creates an alternate reality, it grounds costumed heroes in reality. Dressing up in tights and beating people up is disturbing behavior when you get down to it, and the people drawn to it are likely to have serious psychological issues. The Watchmen all suffer from some sort of mental disease. Moore doesn’t back down from the fascist implications of vigilante justice and how an actual superhero would impact the world, particularly politics.
It’s a fascinating study. And all of their crime fighting is a just a big joke in the face of real criminal behavior: the power to destroy the world over.
I am sad the movie had no room for Hooded Justice. I understand the cut and didn’t expect him to be in the movie other than stopping the rape, but he is a terrifying background character. He’s the precursor to Rorschach.

This is quite possible, but I've heard people talk about "The Dark Knight Returns" a lot. I've read both the previously mentioned and Watchmen. Don't know which I like better. If I wasn't such a Batnerd I'd say Watchmen, but I dunno

Plenty more.

Was the Watchmen any good??
ANY good? Yeah, it had a few good things.
Good overall? No. Very slow. A superhero movie without action... well, I really don't know if there's any action at the end, because I turned it off at the hour and half point.
eta: Just watched the second half. Much better than the first. Much.

Then your opinion either just sucks or is an incomplete.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will buy it soon and will pick up a copy of the graphic novel.

I just finished watching it On Demand. I enjoyed it. It wasn't in my top 50 movies or anything but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Even though it was long, I didn't think it dragged on.

There were some scenes in this movie that had a way of grabbing your attention, and the excellent soundtrack had a major part in that.

in the middle of watching it right now, pretty good so far and I've never even heard of this comic, much less read it.
I'm pleasantly surprised. I didn't think I would like it at all, but I do. I'm pretty entertained right now. Good plot, good storyline, interesting to say the least.

It does not do ANY justice to depth these characters have.
I still say it is worth the rent.

I just finished it ... I thought it was a great movie. Same level as Batman Dark Knight, just everyone (incluing myself) is more familiar with Batman so that got more rave reviews.
I thought Watchmen was really good.
