In 2008, Forbes had Vaughn as the best value in Hollywood.

quote:

Vaughn raked in $14.73 of gross income for studios for every dollar he was paid for "The Break-up," "Wedding Crashers" and "Dodgeball," the magazine calculated for its special entertainment issue, now on newsstands.

"That's because until recently his salary was relatively low, and the films he was in, like 'Wedding Crashers' and 'The Break-up,' had modest budgets yet did extremely well at the box office worldwide ($285 million and $205 million, respectively)," Forbes said.

This is just a reminder of how barren the movie comedy scene is these days.

i think the coronavirus effect makes the public ripe for some classical comedy

Apatow kind of destroyed comedy and with studios pushing mega movies almost exclusively, it's been rough for a mainstream comedy to get into theaters

what's funny is that comedy and horror are your 2 genres where you can create a megahit. i have no idea why a studio hasn't popped up like Blumhouse with horror. you release enough decent $5-15M movies and one will hit.

Comedies are one of the genres that suffers from the studios focus on the bottom line.

They aren't prestige films. They're not a sequel/spinoff with a built in audience even if the plot is repetitive.

You need a good original idea and a solid cast to execute it, so there's substantial risk/reward. Instead, a studio just figures they'll make Hobbs and Shaw and guarantee a profit.

Rushmore
Meet the parents
Zoolander
Royal tenenbaums
Starsky and hutch
Wedding Crashers
Cars

Owen had a great run, but he wasn't in Rushmore. Luke was the doctor ("These are OR scrubs." "Oh, are they?"). The other brother was the coach but pretty minor role.

Dignan from Bottle Rocket is an all time role for him, though, but kind of separated from his early 2000's run.

Ferrell depended on the others too much when he was a lead. He was and is much more palatable as a supporting character because he plays the same guy in every movie. Stiller, Vaughn, and Owen Wilson were all clearly better than him.

Eh I don’t know about that with Farrell “playing the same character”. Certainly there was Farrell fatigue but his characters in the other guys, the campaign, zoolander, step brothers and anchorman were all pretty substantially different.

He and Aniston in The Break Up are totally underrated. Painful to watch that couple fall apart but a great film.
Completely agree

It holds up well today and it's very quotable. Also features Jason Batemen right before his big comedic blow up

Vince Vaughn is a legendary comedic actor...ironically, one of his best movies in my opinion is the 1998 serious drama "Return To Paradise" starring Vince Vaugh, Joaquin Pheonix, Anne Heche, Jada Pinkett Smith and Vera Farmiga. Super underrated movie.

I was trying to refute this and started looking at lists of recent comedies, but I came up empty.

What We Do in the Shadows was released in 2015. This is the End was released in 2013. The Jump Street movies were released in 2012 and 2014, respectively. That's all I got.

The Way Way Back was 2013 or 2014, that's the only other comedy not on your list I can think of that I liked

The obvious answer is The Donald killed Comedies!!! #ImpeachDrumpf!!!

Reality is that studios pump all of their resources into tentpole franchises and feel like comedies are too risky due to cancel culture.
