The accents are tough for me to get past. They all talk like Romanian vampires in the old Universal films.

This 100x.. I was discussing with wife earlier today and mentioned how the acting, specifically the accents, seems really forced. The original Vikings they didn't seem to have to act to sound authentic, it was like they were just being themselves as badass warriors.

In Valhalla the majority of the actors seem to habe to really try to sound Vikingish. Especially king Canute, he really overenunciates every word that ends with an s. It is very noticeable.

Other than that I enjoyed the first season and feel it has promise moving forward.

Show would be much better without the black Viking chick pisses me off every time she is on screen. Either do a historical piece or don’t we know it’s mostly fiction but there were NO black Vikings it ruins the whole vibe n every scene she is put

Agree, it really is a travesty that there has to be these racial/gender quotas on all these shows these days.

It makes no fricking sense to have her as the ruler of Kattegat with a bunch of lesbo shield maidens but I was able to ignore that for the most part and ejoy the other parts that I was more interested in as best as I could.. i believe it has promise id they dont frick it up with much more woke shite.

Whats next? a series on the ww2 German army and having a gay black jewish General..

I'm pretty sure AMPAS and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences updated their rules for awards consideration. There absolutely HAS to be diversity on the cast, the crew, or both to have a shot at scoring nominations.

When I first saw her I thought it was actually going to be a cool interpretation of Gerimund the Black-Skin. He and his sibling are assumed to be real vikings, however, they were half half-Nordic, half-Mongolian.

quote:

Hjor is called Hjør in Norvegian, and Hjorr in Old Norse, a word that means sword. Hjor and Ljufvina reigned as king and queen at Avaldsnes when Harald Fairhair came to power.

Hjor was the last of the kings at Avaldsnes who descended from the Augvald dynasty. His wife Ljufvina was a princess of Mongolian descent and despite her dark skin and unusual looks, she reigned as queen over the Norsemen at Karmsundet.

Hjor and Ljufvina had two sons: the twins Hamund (Håmund) and Geirmund. They, too, had dark skin and were therefore nicknamed Heljarskinn; the “Black-Skinned”.

But nope. It was just some lazy, "I'm from Africa so don't worry about it" writing.

I’ve always thought HBO would crush a miniseries based on the events of 1066, hopefully Valhalla does that era justice.
Will be interesting to see how the intrigue with the Godwinsons and Duke William plays out in later seasons.

Last Kingdom on Netflix is already about as perfect a show as you will get pertaining the Alfred the Great beating back the Danes and his son and grandson unifying England.

They for sure had Africans in Scandinavian countries in small number. The vikings had trade with North Africa. To say there were no black vikings?
Now I doubt there are no city leaders.

As a history nerd I take much bigger issue with Lief Erikkson being a part of the Viking council of 1002, yet when then invasion of 1003 supposedly takes place. Edmund is now king which is in 1016. Anyway Lief and the Greenlanders didn't go to Norway or Britan.

It's a good show, but what is it with British productions that even period peices like 10th century stories need to have multi cultural characters. You did not have multi racial women running the show in Norway back then....or today.

Everything you said.

There were black Vikings. It’s funny people getting so upset about that and ignoring the historical issues with Lief. People see what they want to see

I agree and would love to see that as well. However, a lot of the events during that time were focused in Hastings and not involving Vikings. So I’d be surprised if Valhalla covers it.

I’d feel a bit cheated if they told the story of England during that period and left off the most important events - William the Conqueror. It would almost have to be another series all together.

Oh shite. I finished Last Kingdom a few weeks ago and somehow got my wires crossed with Vikings and thought I’d seen Vikings and ready for Valhalla, which I’m 6-7 episodes in. Need to go back now and watch Vikings.

And now seeing that Valhalla isn’t considered a sequel to Vikings anyway, so

That’s a pretty horrible source, littered with unsupported speculation and conclusions.
Just one example:
quote:

Black Vikings did indeed exist during the Viking Age. During that time, it was not rare for European countries from the southern regions like Spain to mingle with dark-skinned Africans. As such, it might have been possible that these Africans willingly traveled their way up north to the Scandinavian countries.

Doesn’t look like it.

If the show gets renewed for additional seasons, Hastings would have to be the end goal.

Earl Godwin, Harold Godwinson’s father, is already in this season. Harald Hardrada would be included and his travels would be be a show unto itself.

Hell, even Duke William is Norse by blood.

North Africa wasn't black at that time...there was a huge desert there preventing human trafficking. And the small small small chance they got a Nubian slave, he was a slave...not a Viking and definitely not the leader of a city

sounds like you see what you want to see because they're weren't black viking. Othello wasn't black and neither was Queen Anne nor Cleopatra

Yeah you people love nothing more than when no one “gets upset” over your constant ludicrous leftist societal pushes. Try to rewrite history and even perceptions of history Sorry for noticing deceitful pandering.

Perusing this thread and have to say all of the excited anticipation ….and then reaction to “black Vikings”…is funny AF. Who in their right mind thought black Vikings could actually be a thing?

If I ever win the Powerball I’m going to become a producer and film a remake of Shogun where all of the Japanese are black….and Tarzan where he is black but like of the natives are white. Black Tarzan!

How about a WW2 movie with Black Churchill?

I wonder if any of the critics would say anything.

Three episodes in. Enjoyable show but the cast is nothing like the original. Actors are sort of bland.
