This is correct. No time with the new republic and immediately blowing up something we all wanted to see just to reset the old status quo was a massive red flag.

From the get go it didn’t really make sense. After the events of return the empire had been defeated but immediately we’re to believe all that is gone and the first order is already militarily more powerful than the empire so what happened? This is never explained we’re just supposed to believe we’re back to square one and that’s before we get into the story and characters being copied but just shuffled around a bit.

There’s no storytelling involved and as we saw with the following movies no plan at all. It was a corporate mindset, cash grab based on brand recognition. Think of how many stories they could’ve gotten out of the new government failing while the first order regains power then finally the rise of these new characters to defeat them. Instead we got one ripoff and zero direction for the two subsequent movies which led to the disaster SW is in now. Yes, I’d say Abrams was a poor choice.
