This is the most overrated and at times dull western I've ever seen.

I watched it earlier and I'm probably gonna set a M/TV downvote record but I've never gotten all that excited about Unforgiven. It's a solid movie but I've never been able to figure out what I'm missing that puts it on this damn near mythical pedestal of westerns. I love Eastwood as a film maker but his acting has always felt like the worst part of the movies he's in, at least once he got to a certain age

Because it's not a great movie. It's ok but not much else.

The kid who couldn't see shite was a terrible, a-hole of a character that Will should've shot and killed and the only thing English Bob brought to the table was the opportunity for L'il Bill to call him the Duck of death.

Oh and Gene Hackman was far and away the best actor in the movie.

One of the best lines ever.

Best line in this movie is “should have armed himself”

Nope. Best line in the movie is Duck of Death.

Unforgiven and Open Range. Big fan of Eastwood and Devall. I like Costner too in Westerns.

Open Range is better than Unforgiven.

The movie has a lot of epic lines to choose from:

We All Have It Comin,' Kid

Deserve's Got Nothin' To Do With It

He Should Have Armed Himself... If He's Going To Decorate His Saloon With My Friend.

I'll See You In Hell, William Munny

And my favorite:

I've Killed Women And Children. I've Killed Everything That Walks Or Crawls At One Time Or Another. And I'm Here To Kill You, Little Bill, For What You Done To Ned

Those really aren't "epic lines". They're just lines.

There's nothing political about this. It's just a movie. No reason to get so emotional over it.

I’ll add this exchange as well:
Little Bill Daggett : You just shot an unarmed man.
Bill Munny : He should have armed himself if he's gonna decorate his saloon with my friend.

ETA: should have read the whole thread obviously

I've never been able to figure out what I'm missing that puts it on this damn near mythical pedestal of westerns.

It’s basically the finality of Clint’s Man-with-no-name westerns. It follows Clint’s own timeline in those old westerns from the 60’s and 70’s where we believe we finally have a name to some old character from the past. We never doubt his past or rough life or origins.

It’s clint’s own statement in saying there is nothing glamorous, heroic, ethical, etc about killing. It’s gut wrenching and torments even the hardest of men. It’s really a anti-western where he doesn’t glamorize the era at all. All the characters are bad in some form and the weather is brutal and conditions harsh. It’s the opposite of a John Ford movie.

He also dedicated it to Sergio Leone and Don Siegel who had recently died. So in a sense it was his nod to the them and appreciation of the genre that gave him everything. With that all said, the movie is about the supporting cast as much as the star too.

That’s about as brief as I can be.

The best ending of any western ever. I can watch that final scene on repeat. It’s perfect.

My favorite western movie, since Lonesome Dove is really a mini series.

It's up there. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence is my favorite but in a way it's not a great western so much as a great movie set in the West. If someone asked me to recommend a great western TMWSLV probably isn't what they're looking for even though it's one of the best movies ever made.

As a fan of westerns going back to John Wayne, Audie Murphy, etc, there are some really good ones, Unforgiven is the best western ever made; its really not close.

Everything about Unforgiven turns the Western on its head but manages to actually honor the genre. You have the good guy be bad, the bad guy be good and in the end you are pulling for the most deprived character in the universe, Munny. Unforgiven's most important character is the writers. The contrast between English Bob's portrayal in his writing and the reality is stark. It is also a commentary on the difference between reality and how Hollywood shows the western. So wrapped up in a western about good and evil is evil doing good, good doing evil, an commentary on Hollywood's tradition of glossing over the reality of the west and everything in between.

Open Range is a great western, just a traditional one.

Unforgiven is good but it’s no Josey Wales. Love westerns, watched Open Range yesterday. Great flick
