Slap Shot and Friday Night Lights are both top 5 sports movies for me yet they are both often overlooked.

Neither one of those are underrated.

Care to unpack this at all?

Slap Shot is always a popular movie when people list their favorite sports movie - hardly overlooked or underrated.
This one, however, almost never gets mentioned, but it should:

I'm not sure how it's rated to know whether it's overrated or underrated, but I've always enjoyed Mystery, Alaska.
It's Rated R, too.
I feel like the sport of hockey lends itself pretty well to film. Which is odd, because I don't like watching the NHL on TV as much as the other sports.
I just think that the speed and action can create some intense on-film moments and the movies that I've seen have all appeared to be very believable (unlike some baseball, football, and basketball movies that I've seen).
Another movie that I don't ever hear anything about anymore is The 6th Man with Marlon Wayans. It's not really a good movie, but I watched it several times when it was on the cable movie channel rotation back in the day.

Slap Shot is almost always included in best sports movie lists.
I've always really like Eight Men Out. Not sure if it's underrated, but it's not talked about as much as a lot of baseball movies.

Friday night lights isn’t underrated. I don’t know anybody that doesn’t have it in their top 5

Hoop Dreams would be on my list too. Soul in the Hole is another wildly underrated documentary.
Above the Rim has stupid moments, but Tupac is great and the soundtrack is incredible.
