I know it’s iconic, I know it is now recognized as an integral part of the movie….

Has there ever been a major scene in a movie that’s more out of place? Step back and think about it and try to place it in the movie overall and it really makes no sense at all, like we were watching Saturday Night Fever all of a sudden

Uma Thurman was hot though!

I mean the whole movie is like a fever dream.

I don't have an issue with, but while John Travolta is a hell of a dancer, that dance itself wasn't all that impressive.

Maybe the scene that took this movie from cult classic to alltime hit. Travolta fans, especially women, couldn’t get enough of this scene. It brought a whole new audience to this movie.

I don't think it's that out of place. I think it does a good job of showing the human side of these characters in this criminal underground world. Scenes like that make it much more shocking when you see later that John Travolta's character has been killed. Because you like him at that point, even though he's just a mob henchman.

It also shows the unspoken chemistry between Vincent and Mia. Vincent even alluded to it when they got back to Mia's house and he's talking to himself in the bathroom before Mia OD's.

Mia had gone to the bathroom to "powder her nose" just before this so it makes sense. The interaction between them makes you care more about her when she ODs.

Also explains why she's up to snort a bag of white powder she finds randomly.

The simpletons have DVd your arse but this is a valid observation. It’s a weird quirky dark interesting movie and then all of a they’re dancing all old school. And well too.

It's better than the black and white background during Butch's taxi ride.

Isnt it supposed to look a bit amateur? Don't think it would make since for Vincent to start dancing like a pro. They're supposed to come across a little stiff/awkward.

yea apparently my opinion is unpopular.

I’m just saying it’s a movie about drugs, theft, and murder then boom they’re in a dance contest

The scene is all about Vincent's awkward task of tasking the big man's lady on a date. The fact that the date was vintage/quirky/weird was perfect and suited the movie. The date was tense, funny, and filled w/ great dialogue like the rest of the movie. The fact that it ended in her od'ing suited the overall themes you mentioned. I wouldn't change a thing. The best observation is how Mia would not be devouring a cheeseburger after snorting that fat line but we can assume some time between the two events for those too familiar w/ snorting a big fat line.

I think it was Ebert who hated Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, and pointed out that the bike riding musical montage served no purpose and made a bad movie worse.

And what an awesome line when she returned, "Don't you just LOVE it when you come back from the bathroom and your food is served?"
