My understanding of timeline of events
1. They find Lange
2. Marty invites Rust
3. Rust turns down offer
4. Marty sleeps in recliner
5. Rust meets skanks
6. Rust shows up at Marty's for dinner

Well it's partly because the show Rust show up for dinner earlier in the episode, then show other scenes going on in that timeline, then cut back to the actual dinner.
This analyzation of the dinner is overblown anyway. It showed Rust's demons, his connection with Marty's demons and the present day detectives' interest in Rust's state at the time of the investigation.
We've seen both Marty and Rust lie to the present day detectives and the truth revealed in the flashback. It would make no sense for the flashback of that dinner scene to be a lie.

correct. they allude to the fact that it took 3 months to get him to the house, which implies he has brushed off invitations for dinner previous to the Dora Lange case but you don't see it on screen

Seems to me as they are not on the same day. Rust gives January 3, 1995 as his daughter's birthday and the day he starts drinking again. This is the first time we see him drinking but in no time in the dinner does he mention it is his daughter's birthday. I think he drank both days and the dinner was after day 1 (finding Dora and marty falling asleep on the recliner) as previously stated.

Yes, I think it is implied through the story arc and the acting that Rust turned down Marty's offer for dinner numerous times.
I believe Marty even tells Rust something like, "Look you are going to have to come to dinner..." implying that Rust has even refused before.
I think Rust talking about Jan 3 and his daughter was his justification for turning Marty down. He couldn't handle seeing a family on his daughters bday. He instead drank alone/went and met skanks.
He had dinner at Marty's after his daughters bday, after he fell off the wagon.

Nah...Rust says "Allright" to the offer while still at the Lange crime scene. 13 minute mark

I thought Marty also mentioned it in the bar which is when Rust agrees to come to dinner.
Edit: In any case I think this is correct:

Why would Marty's wife tell him "missed you the last couple days" the morning you are talking about him waking up in the recliner, if the dinner had just taken place the night before?
Posted on 2/11/14 at 2:09 pm to Tiger Ryno
This is Rust narrating -- telling the detectives
quote:
"Anyway, that evening, wasn't even sundown, he decided it was a good time to invite me over for dinner, which I got a problem with, alright, because I'm thinking about Marty's wife and his two kids and how it's my daughter's birthday, and I know there's nothing I can do about it, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but...I'm gonna have a drink"

Inviting that evening doesn't actually mean he went that evening.

dude the dinner was not the same night that he was invited.. it couldn't be more clear

Nowhere in that quote does it say he went to dinner that evening. It says Marty invited him that evening, and he had a problem with that because it was his daughters bday. Therefore he drank.
It doesn't say he went to dinner, only that he was invited. Maybe he told Marty alright in the car, but then later stood them up, or called and cancelled.

Clear as mud considering half the posters in the thread think it happened the same night while others think it happened later.
Writer disjointed the dinner scene for a reason IMO
And why are the investigators so interested in the issue?

They are interested in Rust and his actions during this time. What could possibly be important about that dinner scene in relation to the case?

So it makes sense to you that the morning Marty wakes up in the recliner, his wife tells him that she's missed him the last couple days, even though you are suggesting they just had dinner the night before?

Dunno yet

Marty to detectives: "Why am I talking about dinner?" Detective: "Sorry. We just heard some stories."

It makes me think they are lying about having dinner that night
