I watched S1 as it aired. Nothing more to say.
I watched S2 as it aired. Nothing more to say.

Never watched S3. Decided to give it a shot a few weeks ago and finished it yesterday.

Without any comparisons to either S1 or S2, what was MTV's take on it?

Season 3 was definitely better than season 2. Season 1 is still the best if the 3.

It was pretty solid. Obviously not as good as season 1, but much better than season 2. It was less overstuffed, with good acting

S1 was a masterpiece

S2 was an average crime drama.

S3 was a good crime drama.

Season 1 was brilliant and established buddy cop narrative with Harrelson and McConaughey doing a great job.
Season 2 sucked and got away from the buddy cop narrative by using three cops who had no chemistry and a convoluted plot (i quit watching about four episodes in). They also rushed Pizzalotto to churn out another story and it shows.
Season 3 was very good where the buddy cop story came to the forefront and was excellent with Ali and Dorff having great chemistry and the plot was really secondary to the story of their journey/relationship.

The key seems to be the relationship and dialogue of the two leads and letting Pizzalotto have enough time to write a good story.

Season 4 Getting back to just two cops: good; dumping Pizzalotto for an unknow Mexican writer/director who has never written/directed an American movie or tv show and two female leads????? Wellllll, let's say i don't have high hopes. I'll check it out if people I trust like it. Won't be there for day 1 as Season 2 taught me a lesson about investing in crap.

I’m ready for Season 4. The premise and setting are promising. A mature Foster can deliver ( Inside Man, for example)

Season 4 trailer looks Mid at best. Hopefully Jodie Foster knocks it out of the park and has a well written character arc and the actual season ends up being really good

Not holding my breath for the partner with the piercings though

I watched it during it's run and I highly enjoyed it. Ali and Dorff had great chemistry. It was a return to form after the bloated season 2.

The biggest disappointment about Season 3 for me was the speculation on here about the plot turned out to be a lot more interesting than what the writers came up with. The case ended up being pretty mundane and straightforward. Not saying that’s bad, just not very creative.

Everyone liked the acting.

See GoT, Lost, Chuck, Dexter, etc...

you either die the hero, or live long enough to become the villian.

Season 1 was unreal/ fun/ gripping television…..

For the first 6 episodes, then it was absolutely shite if we are honest and pretty much ruined the awesome mystique of the entire season

Season 2 was complete and utter shite

Season 3 was solid

Lost

My conspiracy theory is that the writers of LOST realized online speculation nailed the storyline of the show so they had to improvise and pivot to a different ending. “LOST” always struck me as an acronym that was going to be revealed but didn’t make sense with the new story. So many unanswered questions and time spent on stories that didn’t really go anywhere after the first season or two.

If I remember correctly, they were impacted by writer strikes so they had downtime to come up with a new story.

Season 1 - Amazing one of the best Season ever put on television.
Season 2 - pure dog shite
Season 3 - Solid, was blown away by Stephen Dorff acting.
