Of course Marty is going to paint it like a bromance if Rust shows him that the cult has fricked with his daughter/someone he knows. Get the heat off so they can handle their business because they know how deep it runs.
Marty sticks to the story and doesn't screw Rust over because he has a lot of skin in the game. Remember, he killed an unarmed, handcuffed suspect. It's in his best interest to keep up the story, and he needs no additional motivation.
As for the timing of Marty and Rust's pow-wow, it seems clear to me that they met after their interviews. Not that it's definitive proof, but Marty is buttoned up, tie straight early in the interview (episode one). When he leaves the interview, his tie is loosened and he's unbuttoned a bit, as he is when Rust flags him down. He makes sure he's loaded simply because the detectives give him something to think about with the evidence they have against Rust, and he wants to be prepared for whatever happens.

Why is this "clear" to you? The opposite is more likely.

gotta be *ETA: SOMETHING involved with marty's daughter
Not discounting the possibility, but don't forget Marty's reaction to finding the two kids at the meth trailer. For all his flaws, he's obviously got a soft spot for kids. I could see a video of a child being abused/killed eliciting that response from him.

This article is on point, and has accorded with what I've said from the beginning. It has the added virtue of being recently tweeted by Nic with approval:

From the beginning, it’s been about the relationship of Rust and Marty. Their motivations and philosophy. Being able to decode their being is what the story allows us to do, but it is also breeds the illusion that plot is all that matters. It can get you pretty far, sure, but I don’t know if the focus is fully warranted.

This episode was merely a bridge to get across 2002 to resolve the story in 2012

The amount of GoT haters in here has me loling. People who have never watched the show shitting on it.
Ive watched every episode so far. I like it, think its a pretty damn good show. But I also dont see all the greatness people speak about it, however ive never really been into this type of show/movie such as LoTR and shows like that
Ill continue watching because its entertaining, but its not in my personal group of great shows

Yea, and it was pretty boring because of it.
Reminds me of books 4 and 5 of asoiaf. Instead of opening up crackpot possibilities it slammed the door on most though.

So was it completely random that Marty ran into the ex-underage hooker first at the phone store and then again at the bar?
At first i thought no way it was random.

She got Rust involved unnecessarily and is lying about it in 2012 to the detectives.
Me calling Maggie a whore has nothing to do with Marty. He's an a-hole too.
My point exactly

That ridiculous bobcat mount in the office pretty much confirms that Pizzolatto reads TD right?

Jesus, can I not even read a True Detective thread without hearing about fricking Game of Thrones?
