he lives with rust for a good bit. i'd imagine rust would pick up on that clue
Only the sacrifices are branded (like cattle). Dora didn't go for that shite and tried to leave the cult. The tall man brings her back. She hasn't been branded so instead they paint her symbol on.
So I guess Charlie Lange may have lied because Reggie didn't have a spiral tattoo on his back. He does have a sweet tat of Ms. Dupre (?) on his shoulder though.

- I see no evidence of continuity issues. I watched Cohle's interviews meticulously and they all appear to be in order. Idk why continuity was even brought up.
I've found continuity issues I think in all of the first four episodes but I haven't really focused on Cohle's Lone Star beer cans. But it does fit what Marty says about the Detective's Curse.
Solution was right under my nose, but I was paying attention to the wrong clues.
Taken literally you could look to see what is "right under someone's nose" and focus on that. In Rust's case you could look at how he has the beer cans set up to see if there is some skipping around. I've heard people talk about this but I have not really noticed it.
But what I think Marty was really talking about is meant to be a key to the audience of how to understand the continuity issues. I think Marty is being very literal...he's basically telling the audience to pay attention to what is literally under his nose. And that, as I was trying to explain in that theory thread, is Marty's attire. By looking at his shirt/tie/jacket combo, you can put together what day it is...and you'll see exactly how the timeline has been cut up and mixed around so far this season.

I think two people to keep in mind going forward are Captain Spietz(sp?) and Sheriff Tate. Spietz is the white-haired trooper and Tate is the sheriff in the Fontenot case with two deer mounts in his office.
Speece seems shady as hell. I also had noted that Childress connection between the former Sheriff and the guard that escorted Guy Franciss. Tate did not seem very concerned about the Fontenot girl though. Suspicious.

So is it a crime of passion or is Marty in the cult? I don't get it.

Goddamn this thread.
More questions than answers.
The show would be incredible if they weren't in LA. But they are.

I don't know yet. Signs of both. Could go either way at this point.
But if it is some other killer (Papania and Gilbough even think Rust is implicated apparently), who is it gonna be at this point realistically? They're going to spend so much time pointing out the dark sides of each protagonist...but not to have one of them turn out to be the antagonist?

Cohle's remarks about contemplating Jesus in the garden before his crucifixion are definitely foreshadowing how things will end for himself.
Nah he takes them down not the other way around.

I think you're missing the point if you think that, because someone has a dark side on this show, they are a serial killer.

No...but they could be. Serial killers have dark sides by definition. But not all people who have dark sides are serial killers.
Who else are we looking at realistically at this point? Have we not been introduced to the killer(s) already? I'm willing to entertain other theories.
Maybe the guy with the facial scarring that we haven't seen yet? At least I don't think we've seen him yet.

Another interesting part of Ep 2 is when Rust tells about what happened to his daughter, mostly because he doesn't. She was on the driveway on her tricycle and...he never says. he says that they say that she didn't feel anything, she slipped in to a coma, she died.

This is exactly what I was alluding to earlier when I said I don't think we have the full story on that incident. Her death is definitely linked IMO.
I get the feeling that Rust began tracing this case as a way to avenge his daughter's death and the deeper he got, he grew to realize the magnitude of its scale. His daughter's death would also explain why he has such an emotional attachment to the case after all of these years.
It's likely that something terrible will happen to Marty's daughter as a parallel to the loss of Rust's daughter. History repeats itself, time is a flat circle.

am i the only one that doesn't want the killings to be part of this massive cult involving people high up in government and law enforcement?
I have no problem if those involved are low life drug addicts(ledoux) and some rogue preacher(eli from boardwalk empire), but for it to involve the governors cousin and multiple members of the state police feels likes its been done before and kind of cheesy.

I get what you're saying, but everything is pointing in that direction. The Yellow King doesn't necessarily have to be one of these higher ups, just protected by them.

President Obama has apparently ordered advance copies of season three of Game of Thrones as well as season one of True Detective. Alexandra Daddario tweeted this in response:
