And yet, I see that you continue to discuss this flawed, yet entertaining, series.

i dont think it mattered much even within the investigation.
With all the investigating Cohle did, he more than likely uncovered the meaning of most of those questions, if they werent already implied within the episodes. They weren't directly explained because it was inconsequential.

the admins should just nuke this thread. jesus. enough is enough.

Just giving you a bit of a cushion so you don't have to rely on back to back posts so much.
So, SFP, what did you think about Rust's "insight" at the very end? Think it would stick or he's just fooling himself to overcome the trauma of the event's he's witnessed/were a part of and he will revert to a form of fatalism?

You're confusing plausibility with possibility. Just because something is possible doesn't make it likely.
For instance, we "don't know" whether the recent plane in Malaysia was beamed up by alien aircraft. It's "possible"; we have "insufficient evidence" to rule the alien theory out. Is it likely?
I rest my case.

i think it showed deep down he was a paper tiger, and longed for an afterlife to spend with his daughter. this emerged in his subconscious at near death. if you remember earlier in the series he gets all mad about "death not being the end" but in that moment, he didn't want it to be
i think he realizes his outward hypocrisy which is why he directly goes back to the standard "darkness is winning" shite, and marty "oh golly gees" his way to a positive response.

i don't think there is near enough data to give any likely scenarios. we're all proverbial monkeys slamming away at typewriters, trying to create shakespeare

it's not likely due to outside data that we have re: aliens. certainly possible, though
that lifetime of data doesn't exist for a show that has 8 hours to display

i will "sort of" you off this fricking planet

Of course the plot/story matter, but the details about cult were beyond the scope of the investigation. They got their guy, because that's all they could get. But it also shows you how the case and investigation affected the 2 main characters and their relationship.

like i said, if this is about characters...fine. i've brought up that angle multiple times and it seems to come down to "rust was cool" in the end
That's what you've been doing this whole time, reducing the characters and story to its simplest terms because it's easier to poke holes at those. You don't have to think the show is great but your critiques are pretty terrible.
You concluded from the beginning that this show wouldn't live up to expectations and then made arguments to fit that original point instead of watching the series and being able to appreciate what it accomplished as a whole piece of work.

and that's how you start a discussion about anything: from the building blocks
you win football games and arguments in the trenches

a little past the halfway point...not the beginning
i haven't liked rust since the beginning. that is true, however i still have 10/10 expectations even with rust

my arguments have been consistent...for like 4 weeks

I've given enough evidence for a plausible reading. Your evidence is, "it's open enough to have an alternative reading."

Keep on trying to win an argument then because obviously everything in this thread is inconsequential outside of your posts.

Cliffnotes on this thread?

like with tuttle and the task force...neither of us have any information other than the task force exists
hell, it may not even be a vessel for any legitimate acts of tuttle. we're all guessing (and so is rust)

I agree with this. Kind of similar to the old "no atheists in foxholes" saying. It almost seemed like he just could not sustain his complex intellectual/philosophical worldview in the face of the trauma he endured.
To me the "older" rust rang true to a type that is fairly rare (and maybe increasingly so) but one you do encounter from time to time - the sort of workingman philosopher or redneck intellectual. Someone with maybe not a great deal of formal education but something of a deep thinker. Right down to the hair, mustache and the loose khaki working shirt. I appreciated that about the character. But I think these types are always fighting against the tide of their day to day existence and I think Rust was kind of similar to that in some ways.
