While most were focused on the actual crime, the real theme was the relationships between the leads.
yup that's why everybody was freaking out after episode 1

Yep. The last ten minutes made it pretty clear.

Episodes 6 and 7 were almost throw away episodes.

Perhaps the Childress on duty at the jail killed Guy Frances , and fudged the video to make it look like a suicide.

Did they tho? Or did internet message boards look too deep into it?
um...the cult's symbolism and the whole carcosa/yellow king angle wasn't created by internet message board posters

This show was about rust and cohle
rust had nothing happen after episode 2 that was worth a shite until the final 10 minutes (and he was so unrealistic it wasn't really worth putting too much thought into)
marty was the same guy for 6 episodes and 2 episodes (and he wasn't really interesting regardless)
so even that cop out fails

I think a bit of both. I think people overreacted because we've been accustomed to crazy arse plot twists.
I'm just trying to view the show as a cool spin on the cop procedural genre.

a nice little bow.
Why even wish that? The show is different. Every episode written by one person and every show directed by the same person. It is more like a movie than an episodal TV show.

without knowing anything about the cult
What did you want? Papania reading a secret cult manual listing the complete history and all of the members names addresses and phone number?
We know a lot about the cult

I think the whole Daughter rape thing was included to show the innocence of children and how it relates to Marty. I feel like it's no coincidence that Marty took everything going on in this case the hardest of everyone.
He quit cause of the baby in the microwave thing, beat the shite out of the guys that had sex with his daughter, flipped out when he saw the tape, shot the dude in the head when he discovered those 2 kids, and his face looked terrified as he saw those piles of clothes in the final episode.

Errol's mom/gf/sister made a comment that "he was the worst one". I don't think Errol is the mastermind behind the entire operation just that he got the most into it probably bc of some form of mental retardation. All I will say is you would be surprised the amount of knowledge handicapped individuals can gather on a topic they enjoy. Most of them think about it constantly. I certainly can believe that Errol was capable of everything they showed.
he was the guy who killed dora lang and like marty said after rust says we didn't get them all , yea but we got our guy....
there is no doubt there will be another season with this story ..... at least at some point ....
also I wouldn't doubt because of the popularity of the show that we will find out they changed the ending .... im thinking rust was set to die originally ......
all in all I thought it was a great ending and some of the best tv I have ever watched....

We know a lot about the cult
why do they use occult symbolism?
why did they sacrifice dora lange and the LC victim?
what is the connection between the cult and the yellow king mythology?

Why do we need answers to those questions?

Did they? Or was that Errol doing his own thing?

if i had told people after episode 2 that the questions wouldn't be answered, almost everyone would have quit watching
and the only people who would have kept watching would only watch to prove me wrong

Use some imagination man. Surely you dont need everything spelled out and spoonfed.
the simplest answer is..they did it because they could

Right, that's the way I see it. It's widespread, throughout South Louisiana, it took Rust and Marty like 20 years to get a few of them but I don't think they expect us to think it's over. Rust even says it isn't.
I don't know if they'll ever go back to this story though.
