I think an important point is that he’s not trying to pass this off as his own material. He would often tell old jokes on talk show appearances. I’ve heard some of these old jokes referred to as “street jokes” because they’ve been around forever and you can’t really attribute a writing credit to it.

Listen to his standup or read his book and you can see how great of a writer he was.

On Robin Williams' notoriety as a joke thief, comics use to say, "Robin once watched a new comic's act and didn't like any of his material, so he stole his watch."

In Norms Moth joke on Conan, he even starts it off by saying he was told the joke by his Cab driver on the way to the studio.... "that's how I get all my material". So he's self-deprecating and was an inside joke to all comics that he's not passing it off as his own despite his off the cuff long-awaited spin on it. Norm was no Carlos Mencia, lets be clear.

Damn. Are you serious?! What's next. Are you going to tell me that Bob Saget stole The Aristocrats from someone else?

Wrong. Comedians are cutthroat about outing joke stealers, that was the whole controversy with Rogan and Mencia

Yet none of them have batted an eye at Norm telling that joke...

Jimmy Page stole a few things but it didn't mean Led Zeppelin wasn't the greatest rock band ever.

I hate to tell you this, but Norm had joke writers.

Yeah, it was Jim Downey and he slayed the delivery.

Ribbon Williams was great. But he was a joke thief too.
No one cares.

Mencia and Schumer are the only ones I've seen hurt from joke thieves.

I must say, I never understood why Barbutti was on the Tonight Show so much. I don't recall laughing at him once.

I'll get down voted but Nate Burgatze is exactly this way to me.

Norm used to lead with things like . . .

“This was my Father’s favorite joke.” Don’t remember him ever saying some of those looooong jokes (like the Moth one) were his.

Now, his standup was his.

David Spade said it was the brilliant delivery that made people (even the experienced comedians) laugh and I happen to agree.
