Great movie. One of the best movies of last decade.

Daniel Day-Lewis definitely makes the movie. I think Daniel Plainview may be his best role ever simply because of how important it was for him to nail the character. He absolutely carries the movie and basically has to, because the rest of the cast is small potatoes and the entire movie is very centered around Plainview. Casting the wrong person for that role would have been devastating because there were really no other strong supporting roles, with all due respect to Dano. Take No Country for Old Men for instance. Tommy Lee Jones was the lead role, but was clearly out performed by Javier Bardem who won the Oscar for his supporting role. There Will Be Blood did not have that.

I completely disagree. I think big showy roles with "Acting!" are much much easier. Being allowed to chew scenery with impunity is a dream for an actor, but it's an easy role (and hey, I love Val Kilmer in Tombstone as well).

But I think it's much harder, and more demonstrative of an actor's talent, to play a quiet role and reveal things in small gestures. It's why I still think DDL's best role is The Boxer. It's also why Tommy Lee Jones was so brilliant in NCFOM. Over the top is easy, but it's hard to dominate a film with quiet authority.

Incredible performance in a great movie, hard to choose between it and NCFOM though.

I definitely think No Country for Old Men was the right choice for Best Picture that year.

Every frame of that film is grade "A".

I'm starting to believe No Country is the best film since Pulp Fiction.

TWBB had a lot of cool shite in it, but I didn't really dig watching it, was ready for it to be over.

It disregarded the rule of thirds in the cinematography and made the viewer very uncomfortable. Worked extremely well to keep things nice and tense throughout. If you watch it again and have never noticed, pay attention to the way the shots are set up. The screen is basically split in half instead of broken up into thirds like most films.

Rule of thirds? I know that three acts is pretty standard, but I've never noticed this otherwise as you are using it. Can you give some examples? TIA.

It is what everyone's brain is used to when they watch a film. Change it, and you create discomfort on the viewer's part, since it breaks with your brain's habits in viewing.

DDL's performance makes TWBB worth watching, but NCFOM is easily a better movie IMO.

Pretty dang good movie. Not sure if it's great. I like the 1st scene, 20 minutes of film and no talking needed.

I knew you would be in this thread so I searched you out

I personally like Dano, IMO, the dude has got some chops. I'm sure he was asked to be over the top. Not many actors could have pulled off the church scene like he did.

At times, an unintentionally over-the-top comical performance and pretty picture.

I thought Dano was great in the role. I can't imagine a more sniveling little hypocrite bible thumper than that.

Great acting. Great movie.

Best Film of the Decade for me no doubt.

quote:

In late 2009, it was chosen by Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly, Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian, Peter Travers of Rolling Stone and Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune and At the Movies as the best film of the first decade of the 21st century.

quote:

In December 2009, the website Gawker.com determined that There Will Be Blood is film critics' consensus best film of the decade when aggregating all Best of the Decade lists, stating: "And when the votes were all in, by a nose, There Will Be Blood stood alone at the top of the decade, its straw in the whole damn cinema's milkshake."
