Netflix said “The Witcher,” the fantasy series starring Henry Cavill, is pacing to be its biggest first-season original TV series ever.

“The Witcher,” which debuted Dec. 20 on Netflix, was chosen to be watched by 76 million customer households in the first four weeks of release, according to the company.

That would appear to mean that some 46% of Netflix’s subscribers as of the end of 2019 watched “The Witcher” over that time span.

But it sounds like they're juking the stats

Netflix changed the definition of what constitutes a viewer. Now, according to the company, it’s measuring accounts that “chose to watch and did watch for at least 2 minutes — long enough to indicate the choice was intentional.” Previously, Netflix reported viewing figures based on the number of accounts that had viewed a TV episode or movie to at least 70% completion.

...The new methodology — which Netflix said is similar to the way YouTube tracks view counts, how BBC iPlayer reports rankings, and how the New York Times ranks the site’s most popular articles — will treat “short and long titles are treated equally, leveling the playing field for all types of our content including interactive content, which has no fixed length,” according to Netflix’s Q4 2019 shareholder letter.

The number of households counted under the new 2-minute-minimum metric is about 35% higher on average than the prior metric, per Netflix.

People are just watching it on different timelines.

It'll all catch up at the end.

So give us more than 8 episodes more season and don’t make us wait two years between seasons

Well yeah.

The end of season 1 is essentially the beginning of the story.

Right.
Gonna be hard to suspend belief that the witcher, who doesn't age, and ciri, the teenager, get noticeably older over a 3 year story period.

I think they’ll be okay with Gerald not aging since Henry Cavil is a Greek god.

But we’ll have to suspend our skepticism with Ciri sort of like Carl in The Walking Dead.

The actress is 18 and they dressed her in a way to age her down. I'm sure they'll figure out a way to make her look older.

I agree on the latter part whole heartedly, annually would be nice though I imagine it’s difficult with the production value of this show and Cavill’s schedule.

I wouldn’t want them to do much more than 8 episodes per season though. Maybe 10-12 tops. Or else it gets into the range of network tv shows with 20+ episodes that include lots of unnecessary filler which people complain about. I’d prefer they keep the story tight but moving as they did in season 1. Better quality that way

I'm thinking they will do more episodes going forward, at least I hope. There was still plenty of skepticism that the show would actually pay off, so I'm sure they held back some on the season.

Lots of Witcher news out today, this one a cobbled together rumor that there will be an animated Witcher movie between seasons.

quote:

A page on the Writers Guild of America website may have provided evidence that Netflix is working on an animated The Witcher movie, reportedly titled The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.

At the current time, there are few details about the rumored film. The listing notes that Beau DeMayo is writing it. DeMayo was the writer for episode 3 of the Netflix show’s first season and is credited with at least one of Season 2’s episodes. Rumors have been circulating for a while that the film will be an animated feature.

Had the same feeling about "Lost in Space," 19 months between seasons was tough.

unfortunately this is the case. I read that 2021 is their target for S2, and even that could be a difficult one to reach. It's quite frustrating, but I much rather them take the time to get it right than rush an inferior product

Was alright, felt he was kinda wooden. It was an alright show to me, wasnt better than the first few seasons of GOT like others have said.

I appreciated the female nudity, but some things I just couldnt get into.

And if you are powerful like that and are known for being a badass or etc..regular town dudes arent going to mock you and talk shite to your face about being what you are.

..like making fun of darth vader for his "ancient religion" or something
