From Max Brook's Zombie Survival Guide (re: the need for air):
Definitely recommend it, as well as World War Z. Has some pretty in-depth descriptions of zombie biology
quote:
The lungs of the undead continue to function in that they draw air into and expel it from the hody. This function accounts for a zombie's signature moan. What the lungs and body chemistry fail to accomplish, however, is to extract oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. Given that Solanum obviates the need for both of these functions, the entire human respiratory system is obsolete in the hody of a ghoul. This explains how the living dead can "walk underwater" or survive in environments lethal to humans. Their brains, as noted earlier, are oxygen-independent.

i just finished getting caught up on the episodes. Like everyone has said, the show is fantastic.
Im only up to page 26 in this thread, but i wanted to give my opinion/experience on something.
I keep seeing people ask why he didnt drive the tank, and there are a couple of reasons, imo.
1. He was contacted immediately, and the need to get around people probably was most important to him.
2. Has anyone actually driven a tank before? I have (sorta). In Afghanistan, I had a tank operator spend about an hour showing me how to drive one. Even with him in there with me, i still completely failed at driving it. Its ridiculously hard and very easy to seriously hurt yourself and everyone inside the tank. If anyone has ever tried to drive a track vehicle, you may understand. Getting on a bulldozer for the first time is an overwhelming experience. Even those are hard to maneuver and you have complete visibility.

I think this next ep is going to involve something with them burying the bodies, then they wake back up and bust out their graves. Just sayin.

Well, I have seen many Zombie-ish movies but I think this Walking Dead is the first true Zombie depiction we've seen in a while which is refreshing.
I watched 28 Days and 28 Weeks over again tonight. There were clear differences in origins because that one was truly more dangerous in my opinion. They were all infected with a Rage Virus that never seemed to kill you; when they died you simply died it was always of starvation. They could also die just like a non infected...you also seemed to gain super human athletic ability with this virus but that's besides the point. I'd give my survival rate at a mere 2% with the Virus based-cognizant infection.
This Zombie crap kind of seems like childs play in retrospect, especially in perspective of The Walking Dead. These things move at a solid limp and as someone said previously, one of these won't kill you but 1,000 could. I'd put my survival rate at a solid 95% because it seems common sense based. Either mountain, open farm land, or even a cellar/bomb shelter would be the way to go. I'd probably prefer cellar as long as it was cool. Kind of limits you to absolutely one way in/ one way out which can have it's definite advantages.
Anyway, I don't agree with the whole walking underwater concept. I know they're paranormal entities but even Jesus didn't walk under it. The respiration thing I can buy but to resist the current and even displace surface pressure/wave resistance would require muscle tissue which they are lacking.

I just don't buy that. Brains are inherently oxygen-dependent. And it's the brain that makes a zombie function, which is why it's important to separate the brain cord in most zombie movies (shoot in the head, decapitate, etc.).
Also, I don't fully embrace the idea that zombies are "supernatural," at least not in the vein that they are superhuman or anything. IMO they are simply undead beings. Humans who die, then re-emerge as "undead" creatures in the deceased's human body. That being said, because they are still human bodies, they can be killed pretty easily (see what I said above). And because they are human bodies, they still need things that normal human bodies need to survive (food/water/oxygen). Without those things, the body itself will deteriorate, regardless of what "controls" its brain.

I also don't really buy them being 'super human' but I think part of the 'disease' is them having super strength. Or more like 'old-man strength', every zombie is full of piss and vinegar.

They just don't feel any pain, so they have no concept of pushing their limits. They hit and fight with everything they have left, all the time (when after food). Freshly re-animated zombies are much stronger than ones that have been around a while because the muscle tissue hasn't broken down nearly as much. But with every swing, they get a little weaker because their cells aren't growing anymore. However, they aren't inherently stronger than normal humans.

I'd think it's physically impossible for a human body (alive, dead, or undead) to continue to function for long periods without some sort of sustenance.
The human body isn't functioning here, though, at least I don't think so. It's not regenerating skin or pumping blood or digesting food anymore. The virus just animates the body like a puppet. All it needs is a central nervous system to take over.

Ran through all 4 episodes last night, show is pretty damn good.
Are we supposed to know what happened to the black father and his son?
Im just assuming by shooting out of the window of his house he called too much attention etc. etc.?
Looked like he just wanted to take his wife out of her misery as his last stand kind of deal.
At the same time I dont think hed hang his kid out to dry like that either...
oh and did Shane steal style tips from AC Slater, has this been confirmed?

I get the puppet analogy, but what I mean by functioning is that without nutrients, muscles shrivel, bones don't hold up, etc. The body itself will break down and the zombie won't be able to use it anymore. It can't walk if it doesn't have functioning legs. Same with arms, legs, the brain, etc.

I think you're probably right, but I do think it would make sense that the virus would be capable of keeping the brain "functioning" by using whatever nutrients the body ingests.
That leaves open the possibility of the virus persisting, too. Fresh zombies in a pack overwhelm and completely devour their victims, so new zombies aren't being created as often as they were in the beginning of the outbreak (when they were less concentrated and unable to overwhelm victims). As the hordes of zombies begin to seriously decay, they'll still be able to infect the living, but they'll be less likely to devour them, thus having a higher "created zombie per zombie attack" ratio.
I guess, like everything else, zombie infestations are cyclical.

Zombies are paranormal Cokes. Deal with it. This is your come to God moment.

And I continue to disagree with that.
I get that they are paranormal to a degree (sticking to the definition of paranormal as things that lie outside "the range of normal experience or scientific explanation"), but it's not like they have magic powers that allow themselves not to deteriorate. I mean shite, the whole idea of a zombie is that it's all mangled looking from deterioration (as well as the original attack most likely). I would have to hope that within this world of zombies, the laws of nature and physics still apply...in that human bodies without proper sustenance do decay and the effects of that breakdown will affect how a zombie can use its body.
The half-zombie is evidence of that...she was still "alive" (or maybe animated is a better word), but her body had broken down for whatever reasons (decay, attack, etc.), and she could no longer do anything aside from drag herself with her arms until she starved to death.

I can't picture the underwater theories. As someone already stated, they would probably float. If not, do zombies get the bends, they still have gases inside of them that would tear them apart? Wouldn't large sea creatures try to eat them since they are rotting flesh (hell around here the hardheads would tear them apart). They would be crushed in the depths just like we would without protection. Plus, as someone stated before, their senses would be screwed.
I'm sticking with the moving onto water idea trumps all. They are slow and stupid. Put yourself in a position to take them out en masses or take them out in a controlled fashion 1 by one using mechanical means. No point in wasting amo if you don't have to. Keep the amo for the "oh shite" situations or when you have to go forage. I'm thinking of something like a narrow bridge with a swinging blade at head level. shite even a slot in a door with the word's biggest skill saw would work. Maybe even a spinning blade that is tied to a stationary bike.
