I thought it was an important moment for Rick. You can understand why he macheted the mexican guy, but letting the other guy die by locking him on the roof really shows Rick is losing grip on his humanity. I think this is an important step in his character.
You'd have to think, if something like this actually happened, the hardest thing for people to do is going to be finding a balance between survival and not forgetting you are still a person.

Back to the big dude who got scratched, I thought that would have been a cool plot line to quarantine him and see what happens. Does just a scratch like that turn you eventually? Obviously you can't cut off his whole back. They figured out that you can cut off a body part and be alright, but what about a scratch? Could have been helpful in learning more about what turns and what doesn't

I agree with that. Rick is doing everything to protect the group. Shane wanted control and wanted Lori back, so that caused him to be reckless

Why the hell did Rick run after the black guy after he hacked the Mexican? Seems like just letting him go and not chasing him into an unknown area would have been a little smarter.

I agree but I think the writers are trying to change her character and make the viewing public want to keep her. That is what I took from her saving Hershel and Rick telling her how grateful everyone was.

Happened to Jim in season one. He lasted a couple of days and eventually the group left him under a tree.

He is left by a tree, after refusing to take a handgun from Rick, and is bid farewell by each of the survivors as they leave. His fate is left unknown, but presumably, he succumbed to the fever, reanimated, and is now a walker.
Hopefully I didn't spoil season 1 for anyone and if I did I am sorry.

The Mexican guy that Rick owned went to UNO and was in their film organization.
He played the exact same role in "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans."

Someone explain something to me. I thought that the governor had control of the prison? It appears he has a town secluded off somewhere? Am I wrong here? I got the impression he and his people were at the prison from the end of last season and the rumors I heard on talking dead.

I loved the episode, and have been really impressed with this season so far, but one thing really bugged me this episode. When Rick and the group took the prisoners outside to show them what the world became, the 2 prisoner's reaction of telling Rick that this was their prison and they could have a small corner just seemed ridiculous. These guys have been locked in a pantry for 10 months and all they know of what is going on is the terrifying sound coming from the locked door. Then a group of dudes come in, chop off a dudes leg, then run off. This group has weapons and as far as they know, there are more "warriors" in another part of the prison. All the prisoners have is a pistol with I assume about 6 bullets. As soon as they started claiming the prison was theirs, I just thought, "ok, kill these frickers now."
Again, I love this season. It is so much more entertaining than the Little House on the Prairie that was last season.

Well, they weren't in prison for their brains or decision making skills. It's actually the type of bravado I would have expected from them. They have no clue what's been going on in the outside world, but by nature of having been in prison so long, have become dangerously territorial. And like I said, they don't exactly have an eye on the long term when they make a decision.
I just finished the AV Club recap/review, and the last line made me laugh:
