Maybe Merle was drunk, he was looking for alcohol earlier in the episode.

I didn't understand why he struggled so much with the walker.

Im guessing it was the suprise element plus him being buzzed. Sharing his whiskey w the walkers...haha

I rewatched some of the first season last night too. That season was pretty good compared to these last two. The evolution of the walkers has been interesting. First season they are agile, and fast, climbing fences, busting windows, etc. Now they are dumb as dirt and rotting away.

They called them Geeks in the first season. Haven't heard that term used in a while.

He had to have had a good buzz. I am guessing a fresh walker would be much more agile? First season was bad arse. I hope they get out more next season.

I thought the most unrealistic thing was the Gov. biting of his fingers so easily. I've never tried it but is has got to be harder than that.

Great episode!

Someone mentioned Daryl's haircut... yeah, it looks like a Japanese anime haircut. Looks stupid. Daryl is a badass, don't give him pussy Japanamation hair.

I would think zombies would decay and rot over time. the longer they're exposed to the elements, the weaker they become. especially when food becomes more scarce.

I don't understand why that Walker was drawn to Merle in the first place. They blaring music, things popping off outside. This guy is drawn to somebody with a suppressed .223.

It just didn't make and sense...like about 4/5ths of this frickin show.

I did too. There was marathon on AMC. Once I started watching I switched to Netflix for no commericals. It is crazy how the walkers seem to not be a big factor anymore as with the first and second season. I also wonder if they will go through a city again.

This show is really starting to lose me. I like the human fighting angle but to me they are losing what made this show great. Also, Merle should be a longer term character. The finale needs to be good or I may be done with this one...

I noticed that too. The first season's walkers were really something to contend with. The ones now are like walking melon-heads waiting to be split. Almost like you'd have to be dumber than dirt for one of them to catch you.

And good, ole Merle... he will be missed.

Yep. It's incredibly disappointing how they've taken that element completely out of the show. What made it so great early was there were two threats - the zombies AND the humans. By making the zombies essentially worthless, you've taken a huge chunk of the possible suspense away.

supposedly this was one of the things that lead to the split between the creator and the new showrunner, zombies are supposed to be a big threat again next season

what about city-sized herds of zombies? That would be scary.

They are in the country so you don't see huge swarms. But eventually you would think the wave of zombies would be a mile long.

The beginning of this episode was weak. Rick's decision to give up Michonne seemed both stupid and out of character. Then involving Merle was also a stupid decision. It seemed like another example of writers making characters do things to maneuver them where they want, instead of doing things real people would actually do.

I thought Merle was handled fairly well. He was actually better this season than he was in season one where he was a bit too one-dimensional. I liked his assault on the Governor and was also a little sorry to see him get killed.

I agree there will be a couple of deaths in the finale, but I feel like maybe it won't be as many b/c there have already been several big deaths this season.

At this point the only people I'd be glad to get rid of are Andrea and the Governor. If they could somehow kill each other that will be great. The Governor had a lot of potential, but I think they kind of struck out with his character...not sure if that is the writers, the actor, or the showrunner's fault.

It does seem like they have been foreshadowing death for Hershel and/or Glenn. That would be really tough on Maggie if she lost them both. I'd be especially sorry to see Glenn die.

Carol has grown on me a lot this season. I like her character growth and hope that doesn't mean she is gone.

Rick, Daryl, and Carl should all be safe, and I assume Tyrese as well (otherwise having him in there at all was a huge waste of time). Maybe Tyrese will be the new conscious of the group after Herschel is killed.

That was not Merle's character. Granted he went out with some symbolance of heroism, but like I said, the previous scenarios were not in Merle's character at all. The dude was never going to jump in front of a bullet saving somebody like Hershel, and Daryl was never going to point a weapon at (living) Merle's head with intent to kill. These sceanrios were just so silly and foolish. He was a survivor who was set in his ways, and nothing was going to change that.

I think you're kinda wrong on both accounts.

Merle did change..he spent the whole time talking to Michonne about how Rick didn't have the balls to do it, so he stepped up, only to have a change of heart and let her go in the end. And on top of that, he made the decision to go out somewhat heroically by showing up to the exchange and killing as many of Gov's crew as he could.

And Daryl was a survivor, but he definitely isn't set in his ways, and had already changed a TON. This season alone we've seen Daryl and Carol hint at a relationship of some sort, Daryl making decisions for the group instead of just himself, a MUCH more human side of him, more of a father/uncle role (both with Carl and the baby). shite, he even tried convincing Merle in the last episode that you can't do things on your own without people anymore.

Both characters grew and changed. Merle a little, but Daryl a ton.

The problem with the Governor was the Woodbury story line went on too long. The outline of the story is actually pretty good, it just had way too much filler. I supposed they didn't know what to do with the rest of Season 3 if they wrapped Woodbury up a little sooner.

The zombie using the rock to break the glass door at the department store caught my attention also

Lots of discussion back then about that. I'm in the camp of the zombie wasn't using the rock as a tool, but rather happened to have it in his hand.
