I know it has been discussed on this board several times, but Illumination knocked this out of the park. I know it was probably easy to make a movie with the given source material but everything down to the voice acting was superb. The story was great and implementing the original soundtrack and power ups was very well done. No woke bull shite either, just giving the fans what they want.

This got added to Peacock last week and me and my 2-year old son watched this 4 or 5 times over the weekend since weather was so terrible. He LOVES this movie. When the next one comes out, we will definitely be going to the theatres. I am hoping the Yoshi tease in end credits is a sign he will play a major part in sequel. It was such a breath of fresh air compared to other kids movies that have come out recently. Here lately Illumination does not miss.

I don't think its "easy" to create anything anymore.

There is too much pressure from activist investors, Hollywood agendas and general incompetence to say any content is easy.

They ignored all the crap coming from other studios, stayed true to the material and created an outstanding movie and I think they deserve a ton a credit.

I haven't seen it yet, but simple storytelling clearly still has a place in the market.

People on here get way too hyperfocused on the DIE/woke stuff, but the real poison is overly-complicated plots that aren't necessary in 90% of movies, especially kids movies. You don't need to recreate a Dostoyevsky novel with its rich characters in every movie.

Watched it this weekend with the Fam.

Was interesting. Did its job.

The Family style movies are too few these days.... need more...

Seems like originality has left the building and the film world is more into what the parents grew up on or making sequels of things...

I disagree. The game “plot” of Mario is super light and really makes no sense but they did a great job of turning it into a story that, for the most part, made sense and kids and adults can enjoy.

Also, the amount of Easter eggs/throwbacks they crammed into the movie is unreal and shows they actually took the time to understand the entire Maria/Nintendo history and ecosystem

Every Easter Egg (345) in the Super Mario Bros Movie

agreed on simple story telling. there's a reason that Gru, Mario Bros, and Puss in Boots kicked Elemental, Strange World, and Turning Red's arse.

That being said, complicated and nuanced story telling with an interesting plot can still make a ton of money (SpiderMan: Across the spider verse, Raya and the Last Dragon. Raya didn't make a TON of money but it was the first covid cartoon i can remember and turned a profit.)

Yeah they can, if done really well, but I was more saying that there is a clear demand for simple, regular stories and a lack of supply. Hollywood writers just think they have to be so clever, which just results in end product that's overly complicated (not clever).

I was thinking about this yesterday watching Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, during the talk between Schwarz and Rick early on. Heavies lose.

I watched it
It went by so fast
Usually kid movies like that may drag a little but it kept me engaged the whole time and next thing I look up and it was over
They definitely have a lot of characters to work with, can go between worlds, and can spinoff Donkey Kong and Princess Peach

The fact we even have to say this is what’s wrong with tv shows and movies today.

It was a great movie

There is a strong female lead and people of color are in prominent roles. According to this place that’s about as woke as it gets outside of adding some gay or trans characters.

My only gripe is that Seth Rogen was a poor choice for Donkey Kong.

Terry Crews would’ve crushed that role.

Sequel could be with Wario and Waluigi as villains. They have to team up with Bowser to beat them. Introduce Daisy as Luigi's love interest.

No she doesn't. She just wants to control the narrative. It's easier to argue against people if you put words in their mouth. I find a lot of liberals rely on this crutch. They start arguments with "but, you believe....".

They had to do something with her. Simply rescuing her wouldn’t be enough because unlike the game, movies need investment in characters. Mario wouldn’t normally just want to rescue someone he’s never met in an unknown world he was just warped into. Also it establishes the relationship between he and Luigi. Maybe next movie they rescue Peach.

Not to mention she had to be who she was to bring everything together in the worlds in order to move the plot forward. Now that it’s established Mario and Luigi can navigate the worlds with familiarity as shown at the end.

Besides… Peach is a strong female as she’s very OP in SMB2

The amount of Easter eggs was great. Definitely put in there for the adults in the room. Also loved that they used the creepy as Mario 2 characters for the horrorish scenes.
