The Ring scared the shite out of me in high school.

Few I haven't seen mentioned:
Phantasm (and those orbs)
Hellraiser
Evil Dead
Recently, The Babadook was pretty good.

Lots of good movies mentioned. But, now in my older age I find myself more disturbed by things that could actually happen. I wont lie, the Hostel movies kinda gave me the creeps thinking that with all you hear about these pedophile rings involving these celebs ect, the thought of some shite like this actually happening somewhere is pretty fricked up.

It really depends on age and when you see things.
The Exorcist as a young boy- woof. That shite was real ok.
I've watched as an adult and it does not have that effect.
Of recent vintage, Hereditary was one whacked out flick. I liked it but was freaked as well so for my age that has to do.

"Be careful. You could spend all your money in a place like that."
"Now you're my bitch." frick that demon whore, even if she does remind me of Monica Belluci.

Watched this in theaters in '08 - watched several months ago and still gets me. Mainly because it is realistic, IMO at least.

Supposedly Eli and Quentin found a web site in some 3rd world country where you could book a killing. Basically pay a couple hundred dollars to walk in a room and shoot someone. That’s where the film’s inspiration came from.

Falling Down
As a kid watching it, the scary part was that it was very real, like it could easily happen.

If I'm being honest?
In the theaters, it was Event Horizon. Of course I got home and watched it again with friends who didn't see it in the theater, and I apologized because it lost a LOT of its fear factor.

Exorcist and Poltergeist ... but I haven’t seen them since I was a kid in the early 90’s. I don’t know if either would still have the same effect now , yet I have no inclination for a rewatch , especially the Exorcist.
Also...
I just watched Event Horizon for first time last night based on the responses in this thread. My expectations were high. I was actually excited to watch it. But I’m sad to report that I was disappointed (shrugs)
To clarify: I liked the movie. I was just disappointed in it as a nominee for potential “scariest” movie.
