The film sees Crowe play real life priest Father Gabriele Amorth who was the Chief Exorcist of the Vatican. The story will be inspired by his demonic case files

They are extensive and interesting.

One case of his that sticks out in my mind, as he told it in one of his books:

A woman intentionally trying to be "exorcised" by what possessed her. The "demon" or whatever entity that had power over her gave her the "gift" of being able to read people's minds and gave her the power of Remote Viewing - see what people hundreds of miles away were doing.

Amorth was in charge of her case and trying to help her. There was an associate Priest involved. She had been practicing Black Majick or whatever you might want to call it for years. She worked her way up in rank to some kind of "priestess".

Amorth is clear that not every case is successful. Some cases are very difficult, lengthy and unsuccessful. Amorth related that her particular case was not yet successful and might never be successful.

Amorth witnessed her power of Remote Viewing one day when he was interviewing her. She was able to tell him what the Associate Priest was wearing, doing and his location, even though that Priest was a thousand miles away and she would have no way of knowing that info. Amorth called the Priest to verify what she said and the Priest verified the info and commented "She is quite a case, isn't she?"

That actually looks pretty good and creepy. I am always hesitant with movies like this because no matter how good they are the whole time, almost all of them fail to stick the landing and I'm left disappointed. I'll give this one a shot though, because that was a really good trailer. Just hope it can stick the landing.

See I’ve always thought possession was a crock of shite and 95% mental Illness but then I hear stories like this and I can’t help but notch 5% of it to something unexplainable. The priest could be lying

Know a guy that has PhDs in Greek and Latin, and when younger was closely connected to the church. He did translations of exorcisms - said there was no way these people could remotely know the language they were speaking on the tapes.

After watching the trailer, I can only assume that the word "inspired" means "we know there was a guy named Gabriele Amorth, he was the Vatican's top exorcist, and he claimed to have run into some real demons over the course of his life."

I read his wiki page after seeing the trailer. He claims to have done something like 120,000 exorcisms in his career. Which would be something like 5-6 a day, every day, for like 60 years.

It did say that he said that he counted “each prayer” as one, and that if a person was possessed by multiple demons that counted as multiples too (and some people can have “thousands” inside of them. It was a bit…..silly.

Amorth passed away some years ago, so, he would have had to face the Afterlife as a Liar, if your theory is correct.

It's more probable than not that he wasn't lying.

Movie looks fairly interesting

I feel like there is a twist where the pope is possessed or something at the end

People lie, embellish the truth, suffer from faults in their mental and sensory faculties, and make honest mistakes every second of every day. Even people you would never expect to deceive have done so. However, we have not one single confirmed occurrence of anything supernatural.

Until that changes, I stand on human fallibility regarding encounters with ghosts, demons, Bigfoot, extraterrestrials, whatever.

ETA: But I will see this movie.

I have not personally embarked on a scholarly research project to test your conclusion here, but, WRT to this demonic possession stuff, I will say that Amorth lived to be a very old man and he handled many cases. Many others have been involved in the process.

The process of exorcism was refined during the course of the 20th century to be more scientific and to involve the medical fields in the process in order to separate medical cases from the kind of case that a person like Amorth might be needed. From what I gather from casual reading, IMHO, your conclusion that "we have not one single confirmed occurrence of anything supernatural" has been refuted by actual events during the process of exorcism.

But, who knows for sure unless we've been there? All we can do is hope that the medical sciences remain involved in the process so that people can get the medical and/or spiritual help that they need. It's good that the medical sciences are involved in the process.

I have no idea how the movie will handle it all, but, unless it's almost like a pure documentary motion picture, it's probably going to be more like a horror movie than anything really informative. Amorth himself would probably prefer it to be a documentary and not a horror film.

One source of disagreement on the topic is the Theological difference between Prots and Catholics. Most Prot churches teach that people in Heaven cannot pray for us remaining on earth. They can't pray for their family on earth. They are not interested in doing so. Catholic theology says different - that our deceased family members in Heaven can and do pray for us and look out for us - i.e. the Deceased in Heaven ARE involved in our lives here on earth. That's my theory, anyway.

WTF is this shite?? I have NEVER heard this and have been Protestant all my life. Had ministers in my family and NONE have ever said anything remotely close to this.

Give me a montage of the priest exorcisming his arse off set to some bad arse doom metal. Would be the best montage since The Accountant.
