Watching with my wife on 4th of July during lunch, as is tradition. One of my favorite films since childhood. Anyone else rewatching this weekend?

Like most, I enjoy the first big fight scene capped with the tomahawk carnage.

It annoys me on every rewatch.. at the final battle... as the Militia are retreating back to the main force... there’s a cannonball explosion... but no impact.. just CGI smoke dissipating...

Cannonballs were almost always just iron projectiles with no ability to explode on impact or in the air. The British developed the fused cannonball (a guy named Shrapnel)later and used in the War of 1812.

How cannonballs work

Best war movie ever. Interesting to see how things really happened back then.

Is there any other movie even close to the budget in representing colonial times? John Adams?

Revolution starring Al Pacino. That's right, Al Pacino. Sutherland was good at least.

It mixes some cool stuff with some cheesy stuff. The ambush of the soldiers from the ridge to get Gabriel back is by far the best part.

Pretty good way of describing it.

The burning the church scene - eyeroll.

"we're free men, we work this land" - eyeroll.

The final battle - cool.

Jason Isaacs may be the perfect villain in this movie.

Tell me sir, why I should trade 1 tyrant 3,000 miles away, for 3,000 tyrants 1 mile away.

Loved it. But even as a teenager I always felt like they were just kinda remaking Braveheart.

It was really a hodgepodge of real life revolutionary war heroes: General Sumter (The Fighting Gamecock who gives his name to USC), Francis Marion (The Swamp Fox), and two others:

Benjamin Martin is a composite figure who Rodat has stated is based on four factual figures from the American Revolutionary War: Andrew Pickens, Francis Marion, Daniel Morgan, and Thomas Sumter.
