The Oscars have issued a mandate that there will be no Zoom acceptance speeches during this year’s telecast, but that decision is causing consternation among nominees, who are worried they won’t be able to make the trek to Los Angeles.

Studio executives, awards strategists, personal publicists, and the stars and filmmakers who are up for awards this year are unhappy with the firm stance taken by Oscar telecast producers Steven Soderbergh, Jesse Collins and Stacey Sher. They believe that it’s unsafe and impractical to ask nominees to show up in person in the midst of a global pandemic. The Academy is facing major pushback to reconsider its position, because multiple nominees will likely be unable to attend. Many live overseas, where COVID rates are climbing, or are filming movies or TV shows in production hubs like Australia or the U.K.

Glad Hollywood is still pushing that message.

Lol. They should just accept the fact that they are going to take a massive ratings hit just like every other awards show.

What if a Person of Color wins? They're not going to let them have their Oscar, if they don't show up? I'd like to see that.

That's exactly what they're doing. The Zoom award shows went to crap every time they went remote. The in-studio stuff worked for the most part.

Plus, the Red Carpet is a show unto itself. With a remote Oscars, you're killing multiple other shows associated with the main event.

Why should anyone that doesn't work for one of these other shows give a shite? I can't believe that people still actually watch this kind of garbage.

You can sit at home and we’ll mail your Oscar to you if you win.

However, if you wish to bore everyone with a speech after you win, then please show up in person.

No one wants to deal with the technical requirements and inevitable problems that will occur in order to hear a zoom speech from the winner of Best Costume Design.

They should have the same requirements for the "In Memorium".

it makes sense as the awards will be a throwback to the first one ... (except knowing the winners in advance). A bunch of tables in a modest ballroom (similar to the Golden Globes, but smaller).

Soderbergh is directing, so should be more interesting than the other awards shows. Nobody wants to see a zoom speech and most of the nominees will be vaccinated by late April anyway.

Maybe they finally know what they're doing. People might actually tune in if they don't have to listen to a bunch of rambling speeches, and they can wrap the show up in about an hour.
