Yes, it’s a new mystery each season and the English / French dynamic is great. Clémence Poésy is fantastic. It’s a Top 10 series for me.

I haven’t seen traitors yet, but it’s on my list.

I also thought of another British series, called C.B. Strike (US name) that’s on Cinemax. It’s really entertaining. I’d give it a solid 4.

Alienist, The - 2.5
Americans, The - 4.5
Bloodline - 3.0 (couldn't live up to first season)
Bodyguard - 3.5
Broadchurch - 3.5
Bridge, The - 3.0
Dark - 4.0
Fall, The - 3.5
Killing, The - 2.5 (like Bloodline, fell apart in the end)
Luther - 4.0
Man in the High Castle - 4.0
Marcella - 3.0
Mindhunter - 4.5
Missing, The - 4.0
Ozark - 3.5
River - 4.0
Safe - 2.5
Sherlock - 4.5
Tidelands - 2.5
Tin Star - 2.5
True Detective - 4.0

Some that could count, some are probably reaches:

Breaking Bad - 5.0 - Hate to be that guy...If Ozark counts this could. A suspenseful thriller for sure.
Dexter - 3.5 - crime, drama, mystery according to IMDb
Bosch - 4.0 (midway through new season released a day ago) - police procedural
Hannibal - 5.0 - psychological thriller (always been high on this show, rewatchable IMO)
Fargo - 4.5 - Crime, drama, thriller
The Returned - 5.0 - Mystery and Suspense, supernatural
Stranger Things - 5.0 - Like Dark, it mixes sci fi and mystery
The Leftovers - 3.5 - Drama, fantasy, mystery
Manhunt: Unabomber - 4.0
The Night of - 3.0
Lodge 49 - 4.0 - Mystery

TV series that are dominated by suspenseful or mysterious components.

Of my possible add ins, I would argue that Hannibal, The Returned, Stranger Things, and The Leftovers most meets this standard. Don't know how to categorize Lodge 49 but it is mysterious, though unlike the shows listed in this thread.

I'll add more if I think of any. Thanks for posting, this helps with recommendations and reminds me I need to get caught up on several good shows like Bates Motel, Happy Valley and the return of Twin Peaks.

Great - will add your ratings from the top part of your post.

I agree with your thoughts on Breaking Bad and am tempted to cut Ozark as well. This really is meant to be for series in the spirit of The Fall, River, Luther, Marcella, etc. I don’t want to get too lax with the screening criteria or else the thread will lose its purpose.

Of your second list, I’ll add the ones you said you think are most applicable. I’m open to thoughts as to whether any of the others from your second list should be added. Going forward, we’ll make it a practice to scrub the list from time to time and remove any that got through the cracks but shouldn’t be on the list.

Thanks for the informative post.

I am unilaterally cutting Tidelands. It doesn’t belong. I think it may have been one I mentioned in another thread but doesn’t really fit the bill here.

I thought of another show, it’s referred to as the Department Q Trilogy which comprises three separate films featuring the two main detectives. It’s a Danish show. I’ll leave the judgement up to you on whether or not you want to include it, as it’s not quite a series. It’s basically like Sherlock or Wallander (BBC) where each “episode” is a 1.5 hr feature length film. Either way, I mention it because it’s fricking excellent, and given we have similar tastes I think at least you’d be interested in it. I’d give it a 4.5.

The three films (currently on Hulu)
The Keeper of Lost Causes
The Absent One
A Conspiracy of Faith

Also, I just learned that they created a fourth episode/film in the series called The Purity of Vengeance, but I don’t think has been released yet.

I’ve seen all three. You’ve got my style pegged. I absolutely loved all three of them. I watched them on the heels of the Swedish versions of the Millenium series and they were still excellent.

Broadchurch is an awesome show. It was one of my first British crime series to watch.

In between Broadchurch seasons, I got Spanish Netflix original High Seas in. More of a mystery than a thriller and doesn't take itself too seriously (even melodramatic at times). Period piece set after WW2 on a cruise ship from Spain to Brazil. I enjoyed it, but am not convinced it's a fit for this thread. Regardless, it's worth a watch for Agatha Christie fans and the like. Finished Icelandic series, Case. Really good. It’s simply hard to beat Nordic Noir. 4.5/5

I thought 3 was the best season. I didnt like how they took two seasons for the initial reveal, it was dragged out way too long. But I thought they rebounded really nicely in season 3 and had some true shockers in it. Cant remember anything about season 4 other than the very end.

Those are the ones I've seen of those (I know I need to watch breaking bad I just always end up watching something else). Of those, imo, only Fargo fit the bill. I say that bc shows like Broadchurch, The Killing and True Detective seem to be the perfect description. I look at Broadchurch and Stranger Things as two completely different style shows. Stranger Things has more of a fantasy feel than mystery/thriller.

It's not my list and it doesn't bother me at all if they're on there. I just don't see them as the same type of show. Pumped about season 3 though!

I think Stranger Things should be removed. Any opposition?

Absentia 2.5/5

It’s so close to being the show you want it to be, and it always ends up being a disappointment.

I’ve only watched season 1, btw.

Removing Ozark. I can barely get through Season 2. It’s not the type of show we are talking about in this thread.

Been watching this with the wife and it does remind us both of Agatha Christie. What I've learned 6 episodes in is that Spaniards have no problems slapping the shite out of each other. Nobody really even flinches when it happens.
