1. No, they are not.
2. The Odyssey is about Odysseus' return home after the Trojan war. Not the war itself. That is "The Iliad".

The Illiad ends before the war is over. The Odyssey references the end of the Trojan War, including the Trojan Horse, both of which are shown in the trailer.

For instance, this goofiness:

Is almost certainly in the Trojan War portion.

*ETA: that costume is on the level of MGM+ or lesser TV productions

It's just a first trailer so a lot will change in post production I'm sure.

There will presumably multiple gods involved here, directly

We talked about Nolan's statement below so not so fast:

quote:

“One of the things I needed to crack was how to approach mythological elements in a sort of real-world way. The big breakthrough creatively in thinking about the gods was that everything that is now explained by science was once supernatural. Lightning, thunder, earthquakes, volcanoes... people are literally seeing gods everywhere; not even the evidence of gods, they're seeing the actions of gods. I don't want to say too much about it beyond indicating that yes, the evidence of the supernatural is all around these people. It's very much part of their lives. And I think it's quite a lot of fun to tap into that.”

Not sure how they explain Athena and the giant one eyed man.

Yeah, that sounds like really cutting edge thinking.

It also kind of sounds like he's philosophically sucking up to the Chinese. They don't like gods and supernatural things in movies.

People all over the internet have been bitching about the helmet. I think I can see what he's going for. He wants things to look epic and maybe a bit surreal, but we'll see what we actually get in the end.

So far, I'm not realy to run out and pay for this.

No dude

This is more like what they would look like

And they would not use steel or iron because it was the Bronze Age.

ETA: and I'm not being overly nitpicky about the anachronism. I'm just telling you that you're wrong.

You are being nitpicky because guess what...the illiad and odyssey are mythical fiction...its not historical record so everything you wrote there does not apply. The details like armour can be as fantastical as possible and still not go off the rails

A lot of people are up in arms about the armor Nolan chose to use and I can definitely see why they'd be upset as people do genuinely care about that kind of historical accuracy. However, film is a visual medium and oftentimes creative decisions are made for the visual rather than the accuracy.

Take Agamemnon in this trailer. Without the script saying a word, we the viewer can tell that this man is: important, powerful, and commanding. The audience could also think that he is likewise vain, compensating, and perhaps a little self-doubting. All of this is communicated through this man's attire without him ever having to say a word.

It's not about that for me. I'm fine with Damon's costume being completely wrong historically, for instance. I doubt the soldiers fight in a phalanx, either, and that's fine.

That armor just looks incredibly goofy and stupid. In terms of aesthetics and design, it's bad. That armor isn't even an anachronism because I am pretty sure that kind of armor next existed in the iron age. It doesn't matter what time it's set in.

I’m of the same opinion about genuine Bronze Age armor in general. Fact of the matter is everyone’s clothing in this trailer is historically anachronistic. If they were wearing historically accurate period clothing, they would all look goofy.

I’m concerned the Telemachus/Penelope narrative is going to be the route taken

If so, it’s not a faithful adaptation

I hope I’m wrong and I’ll be buying a ticket either way
