I think we've discovered why the big push for early ticket sales and opening hype. By the way, the movie needs to make $800 million to break even. Not saying it won't, but it's only about 1/3 of the way there. It's a shame this movie has become the battleground of the culture/politics wars.

Even if you went on the high high end and said it needs to make 2.5X, it would need 625 million. Over 3X production is ridiculous.

They have to move the goalposts after a strong opening weekend. I'm surprised he didn't say it needed a billion to break even lol

625 million doesn't include the marketing budget there, champ.

Standard box office shorthand dictates that a major blockbuster must earn 2.5 times its production budget ($625 million)—or roughly double its combined production and marketing costs ($750 million)—just to cover the theater cuts and emerge into the black.

Breaking even is "moving the goalposts"?
It was a strong US opening weekend based on hype. International ticket sales were just OK. It was still beat out by Toy Story 5.

Yet, you'll conveniently leave out ancillary revenues
Guardians ofvthe galaxy 3 also had a 250 budget, finished at 845, which was a profit of 124 million

Someone else did say it needed to make a billion
. I love that The Butt Pirate just casually drops the "O by the way it needs to make 800 million to break even" like he's the authority and everyone should just believe he knows exactly the break even point and not question it.

When have streaming revenues ever been factored into a movie's theatrical run?
They're not selling a bunch of toys and merch for this one either

Google things like licensing fees, PVOD, streaming revenues, etc. There's a lot more to a movies total than just box office

It had one of the largest openings ever for an R rated film and the largest of Nolan's career, and these people are harping on and on about box office. Very strange people

It's so weird. The movie is doing well, accept it, and move on lol. Yet. So many on social media are having meltdowns over this. Hilarious stuff

So we should ignore the box office dollar numbers (even inflated by being mostly pricey imax tickets), in favor of what exactly?

If it once was that, now it's just a bunch of dolts screaming into the void. The "battle" is over.

It’s going to make way more than that.

Even without all that, and factoring marketing costs and Nolan’s cut, I think it’s safe to say it’s going to be profitable based on box office receipts alone.

Well, first of all you are ignoring them. This weekend blew expectations out of the water.
Second, yes, who gives a frick?
