Disney would murder the entire population of several countries to get a Star Wars film to 1.3 billy at this point

It was successful, no doubt, but it was a big drop from TFA. And this film was the return of Luke Skywalker. It should've matched or exceeded TFA

Ironically, The Last Jedi is the reason they can't match the "success" of The Last Jedi.

ETA: Odyssey is going to have to keep this last weekend's level of sales to break even. I wonder if Spiderman coming out in 2 weeks will have an effect.

All the same bullshite goal post move

Pretty sure next it’s going to have to make Universal worth more than Apple and NVIDIA combined to be successful

The box office gurus are predicting a 20 million number for today based on sales. That's a massive number for opening Monday

That's not a goal post move. It's the truth. It hasn't hit break even yet.

Are you competitive with your fellow filmmakers’ work?

Absolutely. In the friendliest way, you’re competitive. If you see something in movies that inspires you, you want to try and see what you could add to that. For me, the healthiest form of competition is to be competitive with all of cinema — cinema history, as well as my contemporaries. It’s really about looking back to inspirations from the past. The silent era is always a great source of inspiration for me, but I also remember as a kid going to see the restoration of Lawrence of Arabia when it was released in ‘87. That’s just a mind-blowing epic. These things stick with you. And if you can take on something along those lines or add something to that conversation or bring that type of experience to a modern audience, it’s a fun ambition.

It's...true. The film needs to kill it this week and next to break even. That's not an exaggeration. It needs to hit something like $650-750 to break even, and always has. Weird to see people who are supposed to know about movies pretend otherwise.

Really enjoyed the movie. Was initially annoyed with mental health patient being the lead in at the start of the film and assumed she was going to have a bigger role. Forgot about them by the end tho. Was awesome

I mean if a film meets or exceed its production budget on the opening weekend, then even films with poor legs will turn a profit. This will likely break a billion, so the big question is how much more than a billion will it make.

A billion would be surprising for an R rated movie with Spiderman coming up, but it definitely is possible. Going to have to keep up the pace this weekend for sure if it's going to hit that.

No it isn't. It's the same. That is the target it needs to hit to break even. What I stated is a fact.

Yes. The first weekend is usually the best weekend for most movies. Shocking, I know.
