Yea just got out. Get the easy out of the way, consistently some of the worst sound mixing and audio quality I’ve heard in a very long time. Baffling bad. Dialogue wasn’t much better. That’s been pretty consistent in the reviews.
Now, I thought the actual movie was decent enough as an action/adventure movie. However as you’ve pointed out, it was a pretty bad Odyssey movie. They really portrayed the characters very poorly to who they are, and left out so much important stuff. I’m honestly not sure which character they did the worst with, quite a few to choose from.
I think it had plenty of really cool sequences and some parts were extremely well done. Battle scenes were very cool. Just felt like an adventure movie in just the shell of the Odyssey.

Nolan is such a masterclass director
His scope and scale did it justice I thought
Yes there were some boggy parts . But this was really solid .

. Swore it has to be a bit at this point. It was so bad. Ruined scenes bad at parts.

Just got out. Overall thought it was pretty solid.
Was expecting a lil more action. Beginning was kinda dragged out, I laughed when the tranny got killed in the opening scene lol. Ending was wild.
Made me wanna watch re watch troy.

I was mostly bored. And FFS the sound was horrible. Too often could not hear what the hell was being said. Not a problem I ever have in a theatre. I hated the modern vernacular. It doesn't work for ancient mythology. Neither does Travis Scott over the credits. Cringe as the kids say. Really good effects though.
And no, Ellen Page was not believable in the slightest. Quite jarring to see the attempt. Fortunately not a large role.

I thought it was incredible. Really good. Still processing, but the last 20 minutes or so when Odysseus returns was amazing. Our theater cheered and clapped.

Just got out.
I'm as conservative of a man as they come and I fight anyone who claims this film is woke. Questionable casting decisions? On the surface - sure. And I complained my fair share on this board over the last several months. However, you barely even notice them once the film starts. And this film is magnificent. It was a little annoying at times when the score was drowning out the dialogue, but my theater only had that happen intermittently.
Matt Damon was awesome. Easily his best performance since Good Will Hunting. I really liked Tom Holland as Telemachus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope. The emotional moments really rang true for me. Especially when Calypso gives the figurine of Athena back to Odysseus. And I also really loved the moment toward the end where Odysseus strings the bow and plucks it. That sly smile Penelope gives without even looking back was pretty awesome.
There's a lot of fake news out there surrounding Elliot Page's character. Yeah, she's playing a dude in the film but she isn't a stand in for Achilles. Just watch the movie and you'll know immediately what I'm talking about. Lupita Nyong'o is barely in the film and Jon Bernthal's Menelaus even kind of sneeringly introduces her as "the face that launched a thousand ships," before showing Telemachus the scarred left side of her face and saying, "Now, it wouldn't launch five hundred."
Anyways...I begrudgingly admit that right wing social media was very wrong about this one. I went in with an open mind, leaving my biases at the door, and came away thoroughly entertained.
Final Rating: 9/10.

I'll add that there were some minor changes from the poem. Like, how Menaleus knows where Odysseus is and how he had to trick a sea god into finding out. The gods were a bit under represented. Another example of this is that Hermes gives Odysseus a potion to block him from getting changed into a pig when he eats Circe's stew. I understand it can be tricky portraying gods but that was a big criticism in Troy when it came out that they didnt include any, and the gods are huge in The Illiad. I also thought no Achilles was kinda disappointing. I thought we'd at least get an outline of him as they storm through Troy. I was also hoping they'd keep the part from the poem where Telamechus hangs all of the female servants at the end for sleeping with the suitors which is arguably the most brutal part in the poem, but i didnt expect it to be there.
The Argos part they did include
I dont think any of these omissions took away from the film though. Again, i absolutely loved how Nolan focused on the theme of Zeus' law and being kind to your neighbor. You see throughout the whole movie that things break down when this is not followed and i thought it was a genius move circling back to the Trojan Horse being the ultimate betrayal of this law and the catalyst that set all these events in motion. I think Homer would be proud.
Also, i dont understand the sound complaints at all. 0 issues in my theater.

I'm also wondering if Zendaya actually was Athena or the ghost/memory of the priestess who got killed outside the temple as they sack Troy. Perhaps she's meant to represent both? Either way, he clearly has a lot of guilt/shame toward her in all the scenes they share together.

Even if she was born a man it’s still stupid casting. She is tiny and frail and looks like half a tard. You don’t cast that to portray a top notch soldier.

Good thing the character wasn't supposed to be a top notch soldier then. This is made clear if you watch the movie. Odysseus calls Sinon the best soldier he's ever known not because of the character's fighting prowess, but because of the character's bravery and steadfast loyalty.
Sinon essentially volunteers for a suicide mission to await the Trojans' arrival outside the Trojan horse and is promptly killed by them once they get there.

I believe she was Athena and she chose to take the shape of the priestess that was killed to serve as a reminder to Odysseus. She takes many shapes in the poem, Mentor being one of them (played by Ryan Hurst) as he guides Telemachus. Telemachus mentions he "thinks" Mentor might be Athena but its never directly covered.

I'm not saying I agree with the casting (I personally wouldn't have cast her in the role), I'm simply saying it's not that big of a deal. She's barely in the film. Maybe seven minutes of screentime total.
