The casting of her is beyond stupid. There is no defense of it.

We agree, but its not enough to dismiss a 3 hour movie for less than 5 minutes of screen time, the majority of which you can barely even see her face.

The Oscar committee will reward him for it I'm sure.

Yeah, Nolan really struggles with the Oscar committee, I'm sure this will get him over the hump

Now back to the actual movie, it was a lot for one viewing and I walked out liking it but wasn't sure if i loved it. The more i think about it though the more i want to watch it again and the cave scene in particular was chefs kiss.

I didn't have any sound issues in my Dolby screening, maybe a word here or there but it was definitely better than some of his previous movies.

To the one asking about Athena, I think she was Athena using the form of the trojan woman.

Even if she was born a man it’s still stupid casting. She is tiny and frail and looks like half a tard. You don’t cast that to portray a top notch soldier.

Casting a woman as a man is stupid, but her role is literally a feeble worthless soldier who is loyal to the end.

I'm also wondering if Zendaya actually was Athena or the ghost/memory of the priestess who got killed outside the temple as they sack Troy. Perhaps she's meant to represent both? Either way, he clearly has a lot of guilt/shame toward her in all the scenes they share together.

I’d describe it as “his vision of Athena took the form of the murdered priestess.”

I have probably 10 help board posts total in my 18 years on this board. And maybe one thread I've started. I've posted a few times lately just to show who CP3's new alter is since the board doesn't have an admin. And I'm a millennial, so gtfo. I knew that either way of spelling was accepted. Get mad about it I guess.

Matt Damon was awesome. Easily his best performance since Good Will Hunting. I really liked Tom Holland as Telemachus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope.

I think Damon did well acting wise, but the actual portrayal of Odysseus was horrid. They got his character so unbelievably wrong.

quote:

I really liked Tom Holland as Telemachus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope

Holland did very well and Hathaway obviously acted very well how they decided to handle her role, but again got her character and the dynamic with Telemachus completely wrong. Her diatribe about deserving the crown was so out of character for her and just cringe.

quote:

Especially when Calypso gives the figurine of Athena back to Odysseus. And I also really loved the moment toward the end where Odysseus strings the bow and plucks it. That sly smile Penelope gives without even looking back was pretty awesome.

One of my least favorite changes from the original story. Another of multiple times they really fundamentally changed the female characters in the movie and not for the better.

quote:

There's a lot of fake news out there surrounding Elliot Page's character. Yeah, she's playing a dude in the film but she isn't a stand in for Achilles

Eh, while not a direct stand in, her character is a direct replacement for Achilles most central part in the entire story, which is another aspect that completely cheapened the Calypso arc. That is my bigger gripe with the casting & use, ultimately the execution was poor and it was used to strip out better parts of the story.

quote:

Lupita Nyong'o is barely in the film and Jon Bernthal's Menelaus even kind of sneeringly introduces her as "the face that launched a thousand ships," before showing Telemachus the scarred left side of her face and saying, "Now, it wouldn't launch five hundred."

Another change not for the better. Their relationship was good once they returned to Sparta. They basically made it seem like Helen was not being held captive after the war.

ETA: I think to summarize my main gripe with the film (which as I said in my first post I thought overall was a solid movie so by no means saying it is a bad film) is that I don't know if any change, ommission, or modernization from the original story actually improved the story. They all cheapened the hero's journey IMO.

For sure an understatement. Quite a few changes, some of them necessary though. I left my review in the OP.

Thanks man. i don't think I write good but I just start typing and see what happens.

I have an idea for a fantasy novel in my head and the Mrs. tells me I should write it but I don't think I'm smart enough Don't want to write it and then someone read it and be like wtf is this, this is the worst thing I've ever read in my life.

Well that would be cool. I'm going to start it at some point. Doubt it's something that would ever get published but I think I might enjoy writing it. If anything my family would at least lie to me and say it's good.

One thing that has halfway encouraged me to give it a try outside of Mrs. iwy is that I've been really enjoying stand alone fantasy and sci fi books. Realizing the series doesn't have to be an epic. Some 300-400 page stand alones have been some of my favorite books of late.

I'm not saying I agree with the casting (I personally wouldn't have cast her in the role), I'm simply saying it's not that big of a deal. She's barely in the film. Maybe seven minutes of screentime total.

It was such a stupid decision to put Page, Lupita, and Travis Scott in this movie. They are mostly irrelevant characters and Nolan created a PR shitstorm for nothing and cost the movie millions.

He must've never heard "theres no such thing as bad publicity".

And if the people not buying tickets arent buying them based off lies like "A tranny playing the greatest warrior that ever lived" I dont see how Nolan could've prevented that anyway.

So now we're just making up arbitrary numbers.

But yes, it was very stupid. But highly doubt it cost them millions.
