A YouTube video I watched reviewing this movie pointing out something I think is true. This movie does spectacle film like we just don’t see anymore, and not some bloated CGI fest. The performances are all top notch especially Skaarsgaard my god that dude is a fricking tank. It’s the type of movie that should be seen in theaters and should be supported so other directors can get studio money to take risks. Everyone probably won’t enjoy it as much as I did but I don’t think many will dislike it. It’s objectively a good movie. Imo it’s a great movie.

Just got out and I enjoyed it as well. The pacing is definitely slower the second half but they balance it out with the mysticism/mythology stuff unfolding to keep you interested.

Yeah, it definitely isn’t an amusement park roller coaster experience . It’s great escapism, just to climb into the story and see where it takes you.

Just got out and loved it. A sweeping large-budget Viking epic that still felt art house.
Huge fan of Eggers and The Witch and The Lighthouse, so knowing what I was walking into helped. The group I was with all enjoyed it as well.
Just so well done start to finish.

Saw this last night. Early contender for movie of the year for me, and I’m no eggers fan boy. HATED the witch but loved The Lighthouse.
I admit I may be biased as I’ve had an obsession/fascination with everything viking since watching the Vikings series 2 years ago. But, this was expertly done. It was dark and mythological with awesome violence and great acting. I was engaged the whole time. Not sure why people had trouble following it unless they’re just not at all familiar with Norse mythology/Viking religion which I guess is understandable. I thought the whole story was pretty clear
It’s definitely not going to be for everyone, particularly people going in thinking it’s the next Gladiator (no idea why that comparison was made by critics, they’re not even close to being similar). Even had 2 couples walk out in my showing. It’s dark and has a few trippy/weird sequences but I loved it.
Eggers was 1 for 2 with me going into this one but now he’s 2 for 3 and I am officially super excited to see what other works he comes out with. The guy isn’t even 40 yet

I don't know that we are supposed to based on what we find out about him later in the movie. We just know that Amleth was attached to him, and I think the film did mostly a good job of letting us know that. A child often doesn't figure out how flawed their parents are until they are much older
That’s just it though. I feel we needed to see him through Amleth’s eyes in the intro. He should have been built up to us the same way he was to Amleth. Then pull the rug out from underneath both us and Amleth when you learn it’s much more complicated

It's the Viking legend that's the basis for William Shakespeare's Hamlet.
yeah, it certainly could have been much better. I liked parts of it, but on the whole it was Meh............

I'm the exact opposite. Hated The Lighthouse, loved the Witch.
I'll definitely watch.

I didn’t love it. I thought it was shot beautifully and looked fantastic, and there were some really cool images I don’t remember seeing like in recent American film. I kept leaning over to my dad and saying “that’s such a great shot.” I don’t think he knew or gave a shot what I was talking about it—he was just there for the Vikings.
But I thought the story was weak. A cliched Inigo Montoya “You killed my father, prepare to die” revenge storyline loosely based on Shakespeare with some Oedipus shoehorned in? Really? I just didn’t think the script/story was worthy of the superior filmmaking.
Like I said, I loved the way it was shot and looked, but it being so dark made it hard (for me at least) to follow at the beginning. It was hard to distinguish different characters. And I think the pacing was too quick in the beginning—it needed to set up the story more. All of a sudden we’re off and running, and I really have no idea what’s going on. And when it finally dawned on me it’s just another son’s revenge flick dressed in a different and cooler costume, I was pretty disappointed.
I still liked it, just didn’t love it. And I’ll probably watch it again with subtitules (I like a lot of Icelandic and Finnish stuff, but those Nordic names are hard for my ear to sufficiently distinguish). I think my dad—not to be mistaken for a sophisticated cinephile—summed it up best as we were leaving the theatre: “I liked it, I just think it could have been a lot better.” Personally, I just think they made some decisions that served the aesthetic vision (which was great) at the expense of the story, and the film, while still good, suffered overall.

Saw it yesterday and I liked the witch and the lighthouse more than this one but it’s still a really well done movie.

Perfect description. I enjoyed the movie and hope it gets a little buzz.

Best non-superhero movie I’ve seen in theaters in a really long time.

I saw it last week and it might be the worst movie ever made. I can’t believe some of the big names attached to this massive pile of crap. The dialogue is unintelligible with the contrived accents and “throaty” delivery. I was hoping for a cool Viking movie but got this stink all over me.

As mentioned before, Shakespear based his stories on THIS one.
You've got it backwards.

I liked it, but was a little let down. As you said beautiful film, average story, mixed bag on the acting. I think the movie was missing one good battle scene at the start featuring Amleth's dad to set the tone. I'm not one that NEEDS non-stop action and I didn't expect that in this film, but I think this is a film that would've benefited from it.
Movie just zigged every time I wanted it to zag. 3/5 stars

Huh? You didn’t. I’m just correcting you. As I was corrected by another.
It’s a knowledge thing.
Today you’ve learned something. Congratulations.

You have my comments confused with someone else’s. The bezerker scene where they were stomping and chanting was especially goofy. The old naked dude just grunted while they stomped. Reminded me of the Omega Psi Phi’s.
