It’s brutal. I felt like at least some of the fight choreography was not good and there are moments where the accents are a bit cringe. Altogether it’s a wild experience though and you feel like you’re there while watching it.

Just saw it. Pretty good, but not what I expected. Without spoiling, I would say they had elements of Conan, Chronicles of Riddick, and Excalibur. All wrapped up in the package of Vikings (first couple of seasons at least ), but probably not quite to that level.

Certainly not going to be for everyone, and not the feel good hit of the season.

Many burials have been found with Norse nobles have had the gum line covered. This movie is by far the most accurate portrayal of Norse mysticism and a saga put on film. Many will see it and it will shoot right above their heads. I found it excellent.

Didn't know that about Riddick's inspiration. Cool.

I was speaking more to the direct scene comparisons I guess, as well as the story.

Just got to watch. I enjoyed MANY scenes in this movie. However the action choreography could have been slightly improved and it would have made this movie next level. Also thought it may have drug a little towards the last 3rd of the movie. There’s also something about Nicole Kidman…. No idea what it is about here but seeing her pisses me off lol.

Overall though I enjoyed it and the music was badass.

Vikings used to cut grooves into their teeth

To me its hard to tell if it wasn't well done, or if I'm just used to tons of cuts in fight scenes

Yep. I went to a theatre for the first time since 2012 and to see this film I was thoroughly disappointed. Very slow. Visually appealing but not a good film. I'd speculate that the Director's Cut would be 100x better.

I thought it was a good film, but a bit artsy. Which isn’t uncommon for Scandinavian stories.

I said it wasn’t made for everyone. But I think it’ll stand the test of time.

It’s not a quippy, snarky action movie, to be sure.

I think my issue with this film was with the introduction, I just didn’t really get attached to Amleth’s dad. So the rest of the revenge stuff felt hollow. I feel like I needed to be invested in that death to care about Vengeance. It would’ve made the slight twist a bit better too.

I think this is why some people were disappointed with the film. Their expectations was that it would be like a Norse version of 300 but it is simply a different type of film. That’s why I liked it because it’s something different from what we have been getting.

This is pretty true looking back honestly. They should’ve had some scenes of him fighting before he returned or doing king stuff around their village before.

Gary from Nerdrotic said that Excalibur was a close comparison in terms of pacing. I guess to some degree that’s true but this was on a smaller scale. I personally think I might’ve enjoyed this more had I not seeing Vikings. Because I watched that series so intently I have become pretty immersed with the whole Viking ethos. Same with The Last Kingdom.
Not saying that I am burned out on it, just that I sort of felt like I’ve been there done that.

He certainly didn’t come off as a bigger than life, Theodan type of king. Maybe that was sort of the point. Because that’s just how things were back then. Even in Vikings, we saw tribal leaders & kings get taken out by friend and foe alike.

SPOILERS: I don't know that we are supposed to based on what we find out about him later in the movie. We just know that Amleth was attached to him, and I think the film did mostly a good job of letting us know that. A child often doesn't figure out how flawed their parents are until they are much older, and since a) most of the people around Amleth's dad weren't that fond of him and b) Amleth lost him at a young age which immortalized his view of his dad, we didn't really need his dad to be laid out as this amazing king and great person.
