Unless I misheard it, I thought it was touching the meat (which could add additional/unaccounted for bacteria) which was the problem, not necessarily what day it was. You can dry age stuff for years if you want, you just cut off the outside layers beforehand, or at least that's my understanding of it.

It was both. She said don’t touch for fear of spreading bacteria, but then someone else asked what would happen if you served it on day 153 instead of 152 and she responded about dying.

This is as pretentious as the critic and her flunky.

I have someone of a different theory why that big eyed girl was allowed to leave rather than, “she ate a hamburger.”

While he did tell her earlier in the movie that she was going to die, I think a little bit of his humanity seeped in from one former lowly service worker in him when he worked fast food to another lowly service worker, her a prostitute. Additionally, she was never supposed to be there, every guest that was invited was carefully chosen because they had wronged him or other people in some way whereas she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time

*Spoilers*

Yeah that’s dumb. It’s simpler than that. He tells her he hasn’t enjoyed cooking for people in years, her order reminds him of the joy of cooking. She gave that to him and also gave him a way out that was in line with the concept dinner, so he let her go. It would also make no sense to me for him to try and kill her later with the “poisoned” meat. She’s not even supposed to be there so he’s not sure what to do with her from the beginning. He wants her to fit into a category of “server” or “taker” but she doesn’t fit neatly in either one. He was struggling with what to do with her from the beginning, but it would ruin the concept menu he had been crafting for months (or year) if he just let her walk out.

I loved the movie. Fiennes, Taylor-Joy, and Hoult were great. Hoult specifically nails that character. It perfectly lampoons all of those people that exist in the culinary world, these holier-than-thou chefs, the cult like atmosphere of high-end kitchens, the annoying foodies and food critics, and even the dumb travel food show celebrities. I wouldn’t say much of the messages it gave about the food world were exactly new (I think in many ways Pig with Nic Cage said a lot of the same things about high-end dining being soulless), but it was a unique and fun presentation.

Well, at least mine was intentional as a reference to when the critic called the dish “Thallasian”

He was so infuriating at first. I was like no one is going to react that way when people are being killed around you!

But then the reveal that he knew and still went was an ahhhhhhhh moment.

I just figured that he fully believed that it was all part of “the show” so he didn’t care. The reveal made it so much better.

I also liked how at first some of the people, mostly the critic, were so self-centered that they believed the other dinners were in on it and that this was all performance just for them.

They're literally dressed up as s'mores at the end and cooked alive.

Some of yall are absolutely no fun when it comes to movies.

Right?!

I can't believe that some people completely missed the satire of it all.

I thought it was great. It was a lot of fun and the cast absolutely nailed it. It doesn't have to be any deeper than that.

It’s a little ironic in that your theory, which I agree with, is being totally overlooked because it’s simple and straightforward. Like a cheeseburger.

While the foodie equivalents on movie forums are trying a little too hard to make it something bigger in hopes of being recognized as seeing what others don’t see.

What if the reason the bacteria was brought up was because someone asked a question and it was answered?

I thought the I’ll take it to go was a clever way to get out of there too. A loophole paired with having him enjoying his job again.

And also, when she was in his house all the pictures of him receiving top accolades and praise, he is barely smiling or even not smiling at all. He had a beaming smile in the photo where he was simply cooking a burger. Showing when he was at his happiest and truly loved to cook.

Yup. And after not eating all night and feeling safe after the explosion, she was hungry. And frick….that was a good burger.

Not saying this to have a deeper meaning but I have often wondered in movies where we see protagonists in these lengthy, tense confrontations - “I wonder is they had anything to eat yet.”

Weird that HBO Max added The Menu and John Wick 1-3 at the same time.

John Wick 1-3 are idiotic but exceptionally good.

The Menu is just idiotic.

This is the absolute correct answer. Her request to send back the meal and the need for a cheeseburger convince him: She did not belong on the menu.

"The Menu" was NOT the food that he and his team prepared that night. The Menu were the guests and his team (and himself). They were all carefully chosen ingredients for the menu.

Had he killed her, to him, it would have been the same if he had added Cilantro to his fresh spaghetti sauce instead of fresh oregano. The ingredients may look similar, but they are not interchangeable.

She merely did not fit the menu.
