Listen, I’m sorry to break this to you, but fish women with red hair and white skin and lungs that do sing alongs with octopus wizards are not actually real. And neither are Jamaican accented singing crabs. Never have been, never were.

And if you can somehow accept that a white fish woman and a Jamaican singing crab can exist for the sake of a story, but not a fish woman with melanin telling that same exact fantastical story, it’s cause you have a problem with the women with melanin….

Is the cgi lion king the new standard? Is the live action Aladdin the new standard? What about Emma Watson's Belle?

Every single one of the animated features have been better than the live action remakes and this one will be no different. That doesn't mean it won't make money, but you're foolish if you think this will be any different than the other live action remakes.

Ask an 8yo if he/she views the latest Lion King as the standard vs the original.

No, they wouldn’t reside there cause they don’t exist. But you are making space to suspend disbelief that anatomically impossible fish women exist alongside talking Jamaican accented crabs in order to accept the story being told, but can’t allow your brain to get over the apparently much higher bar of accepting those fish people might have some additional melanin in their bodies….

Sailors in those regions believed mermaids existed for centuries.

Cool

Sailors also believed if they didn't crush up eggshells witches would come to sink their ships and that routine hygiene brought bad luck.

They were not exactly a well informed sort of folk

Nope, Disney's story they can do with it what they want, you are free to make another story. Call it the Little SS Mermaid or something. Go wild.

Not really relevant to this thread. The point was that sailors believed in mermaids for a millennium.

Again, sailors believed in a lot of dumb shite, ignorant people had a tendency to do that back in the day, doesn't make them real. Let alone how they were described in an evolutionarily impossible way in fairytales.

The red hair of the Little Mermaid story lends credence to her being based on a Viking/Celtic origin. Because Denmark sits due south of Norway (Vikings) and due east of the UK (Celts). The waters between them would have been where mermaids would have resided

Ok, now explain the Jamaican crab.

Well this is silly since I know some 8 years olds and the cartoon movies are definitely the standard. All you have to do is go to Disney's online shop and type in "lion king".

You may believe that the cgi lion king is a new standard for 8 year olds, but Disney themselves don't even believe that. Eight year olds don't either.

No one has said Disney is without a foreign impact, no one. But if you don’t think part of the rationale behind these films that were once heavily domestic-only releases decades ago isn’t to grow the brand internationally due to present-day worldwide distribution into countries that are not as awash in Disney culture,

You really are a fricking idiot who just won't admit they are wrong. Disney is one of the top 3 entertainment companies WORLDWIDE! Do you know what that means? It means the entire world.

Are you under the impression that because the originals didn't have world wide releases that the original characters are unknown? They still to this day use the original versions in merchandise across the world.

None of the kids I know think of any of the live action movies at all really. They’re all pumped for Mario.

This is the same from my experience. They've seen the movies but they don't watch them on D+. They've seen the originals multiple times.

I don't think need is the right word here, but they know there's money to be made. Greed maybe, though that doesn't feel like the right word either.

That's fine. You never really gave any reason why you believe the live action remakes are the new standards.

Make no mistake, Disney will merchandise the remakes and will sell plenty, but after a year or two that stuff goes away. If you search Lion King or Beauty and the Beast on the shop site it goes straight to the classics. So movies that are 30 years old are still selling merch while the more recent films aren't to any significant amount to where they show up in the initial search results.

So I'm not sure what we are disagreeing about because you haven't really provided anything to the contrary that's even anecdotal like asking 8 year olds.
