Haven't caught any of this series yet, but by reading this thread, one would think HBO has resurrected 'John From Cincinnati'

Well, the creators have already stated they have no intention of explaining the disappearance. It simply happened, and now we're dealing with the aftermath. I like that, as it's not all that important what caused the Rapture... it's just important that NO ONE KNOWS WHY.
I loved the overall creepy vibe of the show and it's slow unraveling. It did a great job of setting up the world in an hour, how it is very much like our world, yet completely different. People are just desperate for meaning, and I like their sad quest for anything.
Actually, I rather liked the daughter's storyline. She's acting out, her dad is too busy to really give her attention, and she's lost her mom and her brother to different cults and her dad to the town itself. She's alone, and never moreso than when she's with other people. The choking scene was touchingly sad. These kids are desperate for anything... for contact, and the rules just got changed on them.
One of the ways we deal with death is having a funeral and burying the bodies. Here, there was no body to bury and the people she's lost are still walking around as reminders. Her burying of the dog was her first step towards acceptance.
Oh, and frick Buttons on the soundtrack FTMFW.

but i may start a list and/or just observe how everything changes over time

Luckily this show isn't a "True Detective" or we would be stuck with your bitching for weeks

I'm five days late with this because I just got the chance to watch it and I'm in with the "well... that was weird" crowd. A few thoughts.
-I'm interested in the cult to see if they do anything other than be fatalistic, wear white, and silently smoke to remember not to waste their breath.
-I'm also interested in the other cult with crazy-eyes black European Jesus and the scorching hot Asian babes. It seems like there's some good fodder there for going completely off the rails.
-The police chief was fricking his wife when it happened. No mistress, nothing special, just "cleaning out a gutter". His wife went nutso with guilt because their family was untouched by the disappearances and joined up with the cigarette clan.
-This show is definitely going to be all about what happens to the people who don't disappear, thus the title.
-I'm not holding out long-term hope for this being anything special, but it'll get a couple more weeks from me.

This is pretty much it, although I'm not sure they said there would be no hints at what may have happened. Nevertheless, what actually caused the disappearance definitely is NOT the focus nor purpose of the show. I posted that before the premier, but I guarantee you that people will continue to bitch and moan through the end.
I do wonder about the book and what was revealed in it. I assume it's about the same.

i don't think people care as much about the "Event" being explained, but the cult(s) certainly need to be fleshed out in detail
otherwise you're getting into "being weird for the sake of being weird" and your hurt a narrative structure
