Oh, I think we'll get some detail on both cults. It's just going to take time and, perhaps, be a little oblique. But that's okay.

BTW, I'm not knighting for the series. I'm just taking it for what it is right now.

and i'm not overtly criticizing the series, but with the premier and who is behind this thing, i have a feeling how this will go. creating some interesting/intriguing mystery storyline only to devolve into pure shite is a DL tradition

i'm somewhat tired of the defenses of these vague/unclear series, too...it's like creating a structure and telling an interesting story is passe or out-dated or something. creating confusion for the sake of confusion is just that...cheap

it reminds me of the first time i ever saw 21 grams

Finally sat down and watched the first episode and have no idea what I watched. It was really slow and made no sense at all so far. I will give it a couple more episodes but I have no interest in plucking through another miserable "confuse you to be cool" show.

I generally hate when people say they can't follow a show. But this one is next to impossible to follow.

All I got is the chief's wife is in the silent smoker cult and his son is in the militant black british Jesus cult.

and his daughter is with the drug using orgy club.

Like I said, I am giving it a couple more episodes before bailing but that was easily the worst pilot that I have seen that I was truly excited for and wanted to like. It takes vague to a new level and revealed nothing at all. I'm not a viewer that wants everything handed to them but there is no reason to open a show with so many bizarre things going on without someone answering anything.

What things did you want them to answer guy? Pilots are meant for introducing characters and setting the first groundwork for the plot.

Yeah the pilot covered a lot, it did it's job of blowing our minds and letting us know to hold on because the ride is just getting started.

I never watched Lost but I may watch it now, knowing that the same guy is behind it and his calling card is bizarre shite happening all the time with no explaination.

1 episode that was purposefully obtuse

there is nothing wrong with explaining things to structure a narrative. a show isn't creative or smart b/c it purposefully destroys any structure by being obtuse and not explaining pillars of the story on purpose

hopefully things unfold over time, but i'm tired of people acting like a show that should have a straight forward story is somehow elevated by purposefully mulling the narrative. again, this is just like 21 grams...or worse: babel

and these sorts of responses are quite ironic

Why don't you just stop watching if it seems obtuse you?The Pilot gave us the basics of the world. Like other people said earlier, this show isn't going to unravel the first few episodes. So you should just stop watching

it doesn't "seem" obtuse. it IS obtuse

there may be a salvageable story in there, so i will give it a chance

explaining the cults to give a narrative framework is not "unraveling" the show. they already exist. they already have dogma and structure. revealing that does nothing to inhibit the story unfolding

Lol so it's slow and dull by your standard. You're one of the few idiots who actually thinks this.

And there are questions regarding the people INSIDE the cults. Again, this will be more of how the "rapture" affected the remnants in the past and present/ future.

did you come to that conclusion via osmosis?

that's obvious, but throwing a bunch of weird shite as a pillar of your story without really explaining anything is poor storytelling and being weird for the sake of being weird. that's a negative. i hope the story can stand on its own without gimmicks that people who think they're smarter than they actually are jump on

that was the implication, but it's hard to tell when people are being remorseful for past actions in this show b/c of how every character is framed (sad, morose, etc)

he may have been fricking his wife and was just upset b/c she's in a cult now

There are a lot of ways to tell a story that doesn't involve throwing a ton of bizarro shite at the viewer at the same time just for the sake of being weird. There is a giant world out there and they didn't need to cast you into the middle of it so fast as to have no idea what you are looking at.

This show seems like it wants you to have to watch half the season and then just start over to start picking up on shite you missed because you had no idea what the shapes were in front of you.
