Never played the game, so have no reference.

Recently watched the show and thought it was meh… some good stuff, but there were two episodes could have completely done without and I know it’s fiction, but when the giant zombie popped out of the hole I nearly spit my drink out in laughter.

I’ll watch season two just to see where it goes, but thought it was overrated

2 is probably the most technically marvelous game of all time. Complete masterpiece in terms of production quality. But the writing was just completely inferior to the first game and a lot of the risks they took with the narrative execution, pacing, and structure just didn't land. I can see what they were going for and appreciate the attempt, but it just didn't work

Never played it, but I have read that you have to play as Abby after what she just did. That's a bold strategy

I agree, I thought season 1 was wildly overrated. It had a lot of LGBTQ representation, so the media has to blow it out of proportion.

Just read the spoilers for the second game. Abby seems like one of the most miserable characters of all time. That was a really frustrating plot synopsis to read

I feel like this is a legitimate criticism of Part II it isn’t just the dumb parroted shite you usually see.

It really is a good question how they’ll handle the main parts of Part II because I’m not sure story structure wise it’ll be the same feel like some things will be changed up

I want so many bad things to happen to abby. Then have her haunted while she is buried in hell.

How many people are out there that watch the show but don’t know anything about the video games? It can’t be that many.

I have watched the show but have never played the games and don't know a damn thing about the game. I will start season 2 but only continue if it gets better. Season 1 was meh for me.

I think the narrative for 2 has a chance to be much better in TV format

My gripe with the story in TLOU2 has nothing to do with the big “twist.” I felt like the ending was really weak. After all of the buildup throughout the game, for it to kind of fizzle out at the end was just.. disappointing.

I also think the twist would have worked a lot better if they had flipped the first/second halves of the game. It would have made Abby’s story a lot easier to care about, IMO. It will be interesting to see how they choose to format the timeline in the show.

All of that said.. I immensely enjoyed the gameplay in Part 2. Regardless of feelings on the story, I think most people agree that the gameplay is top-notch.

It’s interesting to me that they cast Kaitlyn Dever as Abby. I still think she would have been perfect for the Ellie role, but I’m glad they found a spot for her. It makes me wonder if they will spend a lot more time on Abby’s story than in the games. For one, there’s a lot more actual “story” in Abby’s part which translates better to TV. On top of that, I think Dever is much more capable of carrying scenes than Bella Ramsey.

I wouldn’t be shocked if Abby winds up looking much more sympathetic than she did in the game by the time the show ends. Dever’s a good actress, is (IMO) a lot more likable than Ramsey, and it helps that she probably won’t be unrealistically jacked like Abby in the game.

I dont mention outright spoilers below but I still wouldn't recommend reading unless you've played or read ahead

She's really not, I actually quite liked her. When you get to experience her slice of life, see her interactions with her friends, see her values, etc, she's generally likable and interesting. She also plays very differently from Ellie in a refreshing way (you go from stealthily stabbing enemies and relying on sabotage/subterfuge to just beating the living frick out of them with your bare hands lol). The problem is that Abby doesn't grow very much. If you look at her in a vacuum and exclude the inciting event from your analysis, there is nothing unlikable or loathsome about her. So in a way, the way the game gets you to hate her feels cheap. The story could've been much better executed with some restructuring and fine tuning but we can talk about that in another thread

The story doesn't really lend itself well to a synopsis read - you can't fit 30 hours of narrative and development into a few paragraphs. Though that's also a large issue with the game - it should've been 15-20 hours instead of 30. Desperately needed an editor.
