The producers in the post credit recap made it sound like Ellie knows she lost her purpose in life, but I thought the argument could be made that she finally had found something stable in her life that cared for her, making life worth living.

Did I misunderstand the episode?

no i think you got it. It's the question gamers have been asking since the we played it and am most curious what those of you coming in fresh think.

Was Joel right in what he did. Even if he is, is he a villain of this story or a hero?

Ellie told him before they got there that there was no half way with this. they go all the way. At this point she fully thinks this is her purpose in life. I think if the fireflies gave her a choice, she would have still gone forward with it. If that scenario plays out, would Joel have done the same thing?

Then the final scene, Ellie asks Joel if he told her the truth. Joel lies to her. I dont think Ellie really believes him, but she chooses to. So in some way does she agree with what he did?

Anyway as far as the episode goes, it felt short but i dont think it needed to be dragged out. I think this was Bella's strongest episode from acting.

ive been very happy with this adaptation overall.

Who in your opinion is the better person? Marlene or Joel?

I don’t know that either is better. Both of their choices take lives. In a world where repopulation will be necessary for human survival.

Both have done shitty things. But I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t do shitty things to survive in a post-apocalyptic world.

I can see where both sides would feel they’re right. I tend to lean towards Joel’s decision because Ellie should’ve had the autonomy to make the choice herself. And he knew she wasn’t getting that.

Ellie knows Joel is lying to her too.

That implies that you’d think Joel would respect Ellie’s wish. And Marlene told Joel let’s give Ellie the choice and he killed Marlene anyway.

Right. Ellie was Joel’s reason for living. There are we no way he was going to lose her even if that’s what Ellie wanted.

I was 23 when the game originally came out. I can say as a 33 year old now with a daughter of my own, I can completely side with Joel while still recognizing the severity of the ending.

I think that pretty much sealed the deal making him out as villainous. An F U to mankind. The show clearly made it out that Ellie’s chosen purpose in her life was to help save humanity and she would’ve chosen to take the chance. The director said exactly that in the inside look of the episode after the ending credits even.

I understand why he did what he did thinking of her as his own daughter. but even so, it makes it seem even more selfish to me not allowing her to make her own decision if he loves her so much.

Eta: granted, the fireflies didn’t allow her to make her own decision either, which is why he rampaged and pillaged through that hospital.

“We’re taking her brain out. Welp see you later.” Yeah pretty dumb on Marlene’s part saying that to Joel

This show can go frick itself. I honestly haven’t been this excited, then this letdown by a show since The Strain. A giant waste of time. The only thing I got from this show is that Joel is a damn psychopath. That’s it. That’s all this journey and ending told me.

Yes. 100%. All Ellie cared about was saving the fricking world and her being the cure. Did you miss the part where she asked Joel to swear to her he told the truth about the Fireflies?

He’s a villain. Did you miss the finale episode. How could anyone think that dude is a hero? The show told us throughout the season Joel was an evil person.

That’s all the ending told me. And I don’t even mind that he’s portrayed that way. But don’t just spring it on us like that. His character just took a 180 in this one episode. Wasn’t believable at all. That’s the part that failed.

Joel wasn’t exactly shy about letting people know he wasn’t a good person, he even admits that he used to be a raider

I think ellie pretty clearly is/was prepared to give her life to provide a cure.

She basically says this. Everyone saying it’s morally ambiguous are full of shite. She wanted to save the world. That was her stated purpose in life.

Its like the conundrum of being immortal....sure you live forever but you see everyone you know die. She's seen enough people she loves die from this

Yep. Joel made the decision for her to just watch the world end, when she could have been the cure, then lied to her. But I guess some people think he’s a hero.

quote:

This is her purpose and she doesn't want to think Joel took it away.

Deep down she knows he’s full of shite but doesn’t want to think about that betrayal at the moment.

Pretty much puts an end to the debate. Joel killed Marlene because he knew what Ellie would choose. It was all about him. He knew damn well what Ellie wanted.

I know they gave clues that he wasn’t a good person. This isn’t about that. His interactions with Ellie was just all of a sudden weird. I think Ellie felt it too and obviously time has passed since the last episode but to just all of a sudden portray him being all attached. It’s just tough to buy it. And it’s kind of an important point being that it led to this huge decision for mankind. And I think they didn’t address that transition because they knew they couldn’t do it effectively. Short of he suffered brain damage or got possessed by a spirit.

I've been dreading this episode because so far they had been true to the game. Damn. Hard to watch.

Was this a flashback to pre-cannibalism? Or was this directly after they escaped?

Marlene knew how dangerous Joel was, if she was smart, she'd have had him killed before he woke up.

The only reason for her to keep Joel alive was to keep Ellie calm...but once she was prepped for surgery, Joel can die.
