The list of good/great movies Hanks has been a part of is insane

His highest “highs” are better cinema, but Hanks has made way more duds.

I asked Grok

quote:

To determine the greatest movie star of all time based on adjusted box office, number of films, awards, and industry impact, here’s a simplified breakdown: • Adjusted Box Office: Harrison Ford leads with over $5B (adjusted) from Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Tom Hanks and Tom Cruise follow closely, each with $4B+ from hits like Forrest Gump and Mission: Impossible. • Number of Films: John Wayne (170+ films) and Samuel L. Jackson (130+) top the list. Hanks and Meryl Streep (60 each) balance quantity with quality. • Awards: Meryl Streep dominates with 21 Oscar nominations and 3 wins. Katharine Hepburn has 4 Oscar wins, Tom Hanks 2, and Tom Cruise has none. • Industry Impact: Charlie Chaplin pioneered silent film, Marilyn Monroe defined celebrity, John Wayne shaped Westerns, Streep elevated acting, and Hanks became the relatable “everyman.” Greatest Star: Tom Hanks. He combines huge box office ($4B+), a solid film count (60), 2 Oscars, and universal appeal. Streep excels in awards, Chaplin in historical impact, but Hanks balances all factors best.

The recency bias here is amazing.

He has been pretty good since mid 80’s. He has been acting for 45 years. As a comparison Gene Hackman was active for 48.

Clint Eastwood has had franchises like Dirty Harry and his Spaghetti Westerns, but has done so much more with individual movies.

TT9 don't post on things you do not know about, John was not a draft dodger.

Read what the studio was going to do if he signed up to be in Ford's unit.

John also did a secret operation for the US government on one trip to the south Pacific

Hollywood studios intervened on his behalf, arguing that the actor’s star power was a boon for wartime propaganda and the morale of the troops. He was given a special 2-A status, which back then meant he was deferred in “support of national interest.

The studio in question told John if he enlisted, they would sue him, this is in 1943 when John was talking to Ford and his draft status was upgraded.

There is far more to it than just sue him. John Wayne was the only bankable star the studio had left.

He might be. He showed his dramatic role range in Magnolia and his romantic lead range in Jerry Maguire. As good as JM is, I think he’s weakest in romantic leads. He seems to make these action franchises because they make more money and seem better suited to his mission to fill theaters.

I think that’s what separates a movie star from a great actor.

If Daniel Day Lewis walked down the road a lot of people probably wouldn’t recognize him.

I think most would recognize Cruise, Hanks, Harrison Ford, Will Smith…

I think that’s what really makes a movie star.

I wasn’t alive when John Wayne was working but can understand why some would say he’s the biggest movie star.

I still think Tom Cruise is easily in the top 3-5 and has a real case for #1

Hanks is streaming on Apple TV in movies no one cares about, while Cruise is setting Memorial Day records in 2025. No comparison.

Wayne went for almost 60 years so Cruise has a bit to go yet. It’s not out of reach though.

Greatest or Best?
Dustin Hoffman or Pacino have to be on the list.

Recency bias? Tom has been doing this for damn near 40 years. Lol

i looked at the metric of length of time cast as a leading role and assumed it might be cary grant at 1933 to 1966. in 1964 he was cast in the romantic lead opposite of leslie caron she was 33 he was 60.

cruise's first leading role was in 1983's "all the right moves" 42 years ago, tom is now 64,in final reckoning his female lead was 43. i'd have to say yeah you're probably right.

there was a movie made with gary cooper opposite of a very young audrey hepburn where he came off looking like her grandfather it became a cautionary tell for actors of that era.

Cruise by a long shot. Was 20 in 1983 and had risky business, the outsiders, and all the right moves. Just dropped another box office hit 42 years later and shows no sign of slowing down.
