Just looked her up, and you right, definitely a difference. I guess the 90s heroin chic left a bigger impression on me than I thought.

Both. Sunshine just didn't land the very last section of the movie/the ending (like most horror movies) but this one is like half total shite.
I literally paused at one point once it turned into a CGI fest and there were 30 minutes left and I was legit upset because I had no idea why we needed 30 more minutes. Sunshine was never like that.

It's coming back. We're moving from huge asses back to pencil thin figures. It's quite the transition.

Yeah, they figured out how everything happened in the Gorge (and the greedy corporation running it) by looking at an old desktop computer for a total of 30 seconds - that's after finding a backup generator that happened to still work.

Pity they fumbled the very solid first 30. They needed a better idea for the gorge.

it's not going to win an Oscar (not that that's any kind of endorsement if it did) but I liked it. it's a "popcorn flick" : don't think too much, just watch it and enjoy the experience on the screen without rationalizing what's happening or how.

Once they went into the gorge the movie went down hill.
Agreed. It was a pretty solid movie up until the point where they meet up and then tanked from there.

Pretty rare to get this level of consensus on M/TV

Not sure we saw the same thing.
Not an A level movie, but the story was better than some other similar movies (Passengers) and despite the dodgy CGI, a bit of excessive plot armor, this was a decent flick.
I liked it...
Better than 65 - which I liked, despite the lame dinosaur CGI
Better than The Tomorrow War on Amazon.
And rate it a bit better than Shadow & Bone series on Netflix.

I totally forgot to bring this up. I personally found that bit funny.
In a movie not too on the nose, we liked that part.
If you’re going to be meta, be subtle.

Yep. Where it may have fell short on the cgi aspect, it made up with the storyline, acting and soundtrack. Leaving the DEI bullshite behind was nice as well.
For the ones that say "going into meh gorge ruined it!!1"
Were you wanting a Romance / love story for 2 hours?
Does SFP dislike it because A-TJ took up the spot that should have been reserved for a trans 2 spirit?

I know. It’s titled The Gorge.
Now, they really could have amped up the mystery by not revealing what was down in there. Or how exactly it became what it did . That would’ve been very clever as well as tricky. But then we wouldn’t have the climatic resolution. It would have to be drawn out where the two characters discover that they needed to get out of there, because of what happened to the previous watchers.
The two stars escape , with the gorge unattended, and maybe the audience could have been left with some sort of ominous teaser of something coming out?
Sequel?
But that would then make them complicit in whatever happens next.

Is this the new Sunshine?
Only in that it feels like two different movies. This movie isn't in the same league as Sunshine.
The Gorge felt very similar to the Tomorrow War in storytelling. Still entertaining for a sci-fi monster movie.

It's a fine line. We've seen M Night Shamalan build up movies to a point where the reveal wasn't worth it, and it flopped.
Also, not entering the Gorge would have ruined the anticipation on whether either, or both of them got infected.

Sequel?
There is still the super soldier aspect that they could play off of...
A follow up wouldn't surprise me with the way it abruptly ended. There is some left over material in there that they could work with in a sequel.

Plenty of movies don't tie everything up perfectly and answer all questions (crappily) without being merely boring love sagas.
But I'll admit that I'm biased because while I buy future tech and unrealistic premises and what not, bad CGI zombies and a mystery dark antagonist company that gets wrapped up in a nice bow (including nuclear blast!) in 25 minutes takes me out of it considering the more plausible start.
It might just be how I'm wired on movies - I don't mind the potential for the gorge having something supernatural/etc. in it so long as there is still some plausibility of it not being zombies or aliens or whatever. Signs is another movie like that in my book (it was open ended for half the movie).

*ETA: SPOILERS FOR SIGNS
Signs would be 5x the movie if it ended with the alien/demon hand grabs the kid. Maybe have a scream or 2. Fade to black.

I've long been a "Signs was great before the aliens actually showed up" truther
I think we're probably alone on this island, having gone down this road before.
SPOILER - Project Hail Mary
Is another work where the aliens actually showing up made my interest in finishing it wane, so there is obviously a theme
