Now I am an hour and a half in and I just want this to be over. Everybody who said it was good until they went into the gorge nailed it.

Agree, the movie went downhill after they jumped in the Gorge.

Correct...I was with it until that point. The first 30 minutes was a completely different vibe from the remainder of the film. I particularly liked the first battle with 'The Hollow Men"...but like you said, everything went off the rails when they went into the gorge.

Agreed that the tone changed when they went in the gorge but they couldn’t just keep a mystery/romance up the entire move.

It was a step down at that point but still suspenseful. Enjoyed it overall.

If I have to say what I want in a streaming movie, it hit most high notes.

First half is definitely better than the second. But it’s all entertaining. It’s nothing groundbreaking and isn’t an excellent movie, but I enjoyed it for what it was.

It was a little unrealistic that an odd looking skinny chick could kick that much arse. I can even buy her as a sniper, but when she’s kicking grown hollow men arse and one-handedly pulling up a dangling Miles Teller, I couldn’t help but sigh. But I rolled with it as best as I could, and outside of a few instances I thought she did a solid job. It felt like a fairly “paint by numbers” type of movie with no real risk taking (I wondered how they would end it, for example…and everything ended all neatly tied up) but ultimately it delivered what I was looking for and I really liked the premise. I agree we need more movies like this.

1st half was very good, but once they hit the gorge it was just ok.

Spoilers

Agree with everyone else. Fun, unique concept for the first hour. Then devolved quickly into a lame zombie movie with a very rushed and dull climax IMO.

I assume it’s based on a book, but likely a much better movie if we never know what’s in the gorge and we never know the forces behind their predicament. Two hours of them simply continuing to evade danger and scheming to survive, be together and escape the inevitable elimination would have greatly improved it IMO.

Correct

Within the meditation on loneliness, loss, and (social) acceptance it would have been an excellent allegory for god, to add another layer.

There was an interesting movie with the premise for sure. What ended up on AppleTV just wasn't that movie

Agree on that. Even if you wanted to have a small part where they both go into the gorge and have to escape, that's fine. But it turned into a zombie action movie like you said, which was the wrong direction. Especially when you consider the looming idea that they are both likely to be killed (or attempted) once their year of service is up like the black soldier dude in the beginning. But that part was basically completely abandoned in the vein that I guess every single person responsible for this company was.....on the chopper that exploded? Was Sigourney Weaver literally the only person in charge and called every single shot? Even if she dies, is there nobody else in charge...a second-in-command even? It just seems too neatly wrapped up that once they blow the bomb and Sigourney Weaver dies that everything is just okay now.

And can we discuss the absolute ridiculousness of the chopper pilot taking off at the tower and immediately diving into the fricking gorge? You know a fricking nuke is about to go off, so why would you not...I don't know....take off straight up vertically? Or turn around and travel in a direct line away from the bomb? Or even head across into the other territory? But literally the one place you don't want to be is in the gorge with the gigantic nuclear weapon. Yet that's exactly where he flew the chopper. The absolute insanity of that cracked me up when I saw it. He literally takes off and we see him drive DOWN just above the fog.

The only thing worse was the new arrangement of "All Along the Watchtower" as they walked...along their respective watchtower.

May as well have done one for The Cranberries "Zombie" when they were fighting zombies in the Gorge.

My wife and I groaned through the entire movie. We may just be far different than everyone else, but we thought the movie was ridiculous.

I thought for what they are trying for it was well done. They set up a backstory for each character which led them to where they were. Not terribly unlike Passengers with Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence. Two strangers stranded, and having to face insane circumstances, against ridiculous odds.

Sure there were super-duper conveniences, which popped up during and even at the end of the film, but I didn’t mind it.
Both Miles Tiller & Anya Taylor Joy played well off each other, both needing the other to survive.

Also, Sigourney Weaver played a similar character in The Cabin in the Woods.

I agree with your overall take, except for this.

Also, ATJ looked anorexic and terrible (for her).

I was watching and thinking to myself, damn she’s never looked better.
I think it was the dark hair, and short cut.

It really kind of dissolved into mediocrity when they went into the Gorge. But I kind of mentally checked out when they had the drumming and chess montage- almost as if they were playing off Whiplash and Queen's Gambit. Whether intended or not (and how could it not be) it felt like a meta joke that just kind of rubbed me the wrong way.

Could be the buccal fat removal. I don't know if I've seen her since this allegedly happened. I think the last new movie I've seen with her was the Northman

*Spoiler Alert*

Agree but I did like the initial premise it became unwound after he fell...it was cartoonish.

Yeah it wasn't truly bad until he fell. It wasn't exactly what I thought it was going to be but it was fine up to that point. Then it got real shitty real quickly.
